"Don't step on the silver part". Although it is slowly dying out as a custom, it has long been considered bad acting to step on the threshold part of a Japanese house. There are various theories as to why, including that it is a religiously sacred part of the house and that it can easily damage the house. My favorite theory is that there might be a ninja lurking under the floor and he might stab you with a katana through a gap in the tatami mat.

I always took the line "we're going to see the sky" as meaning that because they lost Takako last time, they returned with their heads held down. Essentially they want to complete their expedition, since the last one was considered a failure.
