The war against flowers in this series is severe, hahaha!! There definitely is a focus on parents and nomenclature in this series like with Monster! And I hadn't thought about the pressure Gesicht put on Helena but yeah -- bringing a child into the world to "cure your loneliness" is maybe not the best idea. @.@ Speak your truth! For me, I agree that Tenma is projecting his own hatred at the world and his misunderstood grief from his son (which we don't even know if it was a THING -- Tenma just believes it was) onto the robots he's working with and on -- which is...problematic to me as well. And yessss, two weeks left -- this series does not give you time for the grief to settle in like Monster does, that's for sure! But, I am excited for this coming week! Even if this episode was REALLY hard to get through. *tears for Gesicht* Thank you for the comment and kind words!

Loved the reaction & discussion! 😭 Why, show? Why. Is this now one of the most persistently traumatic uses of flower imagery in a series? Flowers for memory, as examples of life but also bringers of death, flowers as lies, etc. This show also really illustrates Urasawa’s narrative priorities (which are shared with Monster) – the importance and power of names, and the hubris of parents/creators (and the former may as well be just an off-shoot of the latter). We see a bunch of examples: Dr Tenma and what he tries to do with Atom, imposing his grief and rage at the world onto Atom; Prof. Abullah and Sahad; etc, etc. Honestly? Gesicht’s line about Helena not being lonely anymore if they have kids (in the dub: “you wouldn’t have to feel so alone all the time”) – I put into the same shitpile. And the scene of Dr Tenma and Helena? To me cemented where he views himself in the food chain – he wants to originate specific emotions in 'robots' because he is projecting his own internal emotional state as an objective external-world truth. In him I do not see empathy. Just the good old idea of wanting someone who will truly understand – and creating a child for that purpose. Abhorrent. I have Strong opinions on this. 😆 This was an upsetting episode for a multitude of reasons. I’m looking forward to next week, I suppose – the discussion anyway, if not the episode yet. 💙🌷😭
