Early in the movie Mordo(Chiwetel Ejifor) told Strange the relic chooses the wielder. When Strange visited the NY sanctum the cloak was depressingly chilling in the box and reacted happily when Strange strolled past it essentially choosing him. Love subtle foreshadowing.

Doctor strange was not likeable at first to me ...which is a credit to the actor doin a good job and the writing.
