In the books, Jacob never had a chance it was always Edward. They played it up in the movie. Also, Jacob is whatever the kid wants him to be. For now, he’s her friend and protector, but if she wants more in the future then it changes. Fun fact, the fight scene doesn’t happen in the books they just talk it out. They changed in the movie because they thought it’d be entertaining. When it was first released everyone was crying in the theaters because it didn’t happen in the books.
