I used to fix laptops and for what it's worth, normally I replace screens by taking the whole lid off the back and just unscrewing things - never used a heat gun. That said, I never replaced a touchscreen separately from a display panel... but usually you go in through the bottom of the laptop to get to the hinges, and detach the connectors from that side. Your way was funnier though.
