Operational amplifiers do a mathematical OPERATRION to a signal like Multiply, subrtrat, add, divide, integrate, differentiate. They got their name from the early days of analog computers (yes, ANALOG computers). The input signal represents a mathematic equation, stick it in an operational amplifier and out comes the operation to that equation, like multiply. They are still, and always will be ued all over the place, but they don't think of them as doing math operations like they used to when they were part of a real computer.
