What if you add capacitance to the van der graf? and you could use the internal resistor of the dmm in the voltage divider even low value resistance in current measurement …

If you are looking for a follow up to this video, another method for reading higher voltages without risking delicate sensing circuits is through the use of opto-isolators. We use those quite regularly where I work. Not sure how that works on Van de Graf generators that discharge in micro amps though...
