HIGH VOLTAGE FUSE!!!

Of course you know that to extinguish the arc in REALLY HIGH VOLTAGE utility circuit breakers (like in the order of 110 kV or higher), either a powerful blast of air is used or the contacts are submerged in oil or sulfur hexafluoride gas.

When the fuse is stil conducting, the voltage across it is proportional to the current flowing through it. The Power is IR^2 wher R is the resistance of the fuse and is very small. From the point of view of the entire circuit the fuse is a short circuit with no resistance so the current is regulated by other components - those with significantly high resistance and the power supply voltage is almost entirely delivered to them and not to the fuse. Once the fuse blows, the situation turns 180°. Instead of almost no resistance, it now has almost all the resistance.

Wait a sec... so.. the voltage rating is then a MAXIMUM voltage rating on a fuse, and similar to a capacitor, we can substitute any equal or higher voltage rating? Explain to us why it is AMPS and not WATTS that matter in a fuse.. It would seem to me that it would be the total power that would blow the fuse, not just the AMPS regardless of the voltage (within that max value) Thanks for another awesome video!!!

Hah! Are they actually springs? It reminds me of a time I still feel so bad about. Back in high school, my Dad brought home a couple of cool springs that he picked up from a supplier on his way home. They just looked like regular springs, but when I tried to compress one, it did not go back to its normal shape. When my Dad saw me playing with it, he was horrified. Turns out they were a pair of prototypes for a fuse they needed and those were the only copies, forcing them to order another set!
