What they always thought at shool at my time was to always test with the nail side of the finger. Obviously with the skin part, not the nail. The reason being if there is a dangerous voltage your hand will spasm into a fist, and you want that fist to close away from the wire which is causing the spasm. If you're touching a potentialy dangerous main with the 'pointy' side of the finger the chances of grabbing the wire while spasming increase.
