I wonder what would happen if you used a giant LOOP of wire instead of two wires placed X meters apart. If you had 1km of wire in a loop (circle) you should be able to measure a delay, if any. I did this with my son using a red LED laser and a road reflector that was about 1km away and a rotating disk and a slit. We measured the speed of light by looking at the time it took to get to the reflector and back (2km).

That's true twisting it would add to the length a bit, but not as much as 50%! I think it is closer to 1.5%. So within the margin of error.

I would actually like to see you take it one step further and terminate both ends of the transmission line so there aren't any visible reflections.
