And every 5 years or so take a de-thatching rake to it. That's nice and labor-intensive as well. Mine is due and I'm not looking forward to it.

I would perhaps aerate mine, but it's currently under about 1 m of packed snow and the ground is most likely frozen solid as well. Have you any experience aerating your lawn with a pickaxe?
