There are advantages. Water boils with a 220 V kettle way faster than 120 V because they can use twice the wattage for the same current.

I'm surprised it's just 1000W. Here in Europe, it's crazy how high wattage some small appliances have got, most likely for marketing. I wired my lab like your kitchen, top plug one 120V phase and the bottom plug the other phase. That gives me easy access to 220V for a temporary test or to run my sister-in-laws 220V secret toys. and also, when I am stupid and blow a fuse on one of the 120V phases, I have easy access to the other 120V line without having to go out and reset the breaker.

That is so very interesting! Have the house wired such that one outlet is on one phase and the other outlet is on the other phase! If I ever build a house, I am definitely going to have it wired like that.

Apartments are often supplied with 120 V three phase supply to operate heavy motors like elevators. Phase to phase voltage is 120 degrees apart or 120V x square root of 3 which is 208 V. Homes usually have step-down transformers outputting two 120 V phases 180 degrees apart hence full 240 V

I got kind of the same problem, I have only 230V single phase IT in my house and I saved a couple of 15kVA 400V 3 phase UPS from ending at the scrapyard, they are quite picky about their input to start up… any idea how to fool them to start? Happy holidays to you and your family!

Very interesting. I live in an appartment in Canada (Quebec) and my meter measures 245 volts across the two phases in my kitchen... So I guess my appartment is wired like the house you showed. I guess I bought my step up transformer for nothing!

Good catch on the wire arcing. Also, while removing a dryer to repair it, I grabbed the back of it to pull it towards me so I could unplug it. However, I got shocked right away. This was in an older mobile home in Florida and whoever wired the plug into it, used the wrong cable. So the back of the drier wasn't grounded... I was glad to see you weren't shocked behind the stove.
