I'm a new member and this is the exact type of stuff I was hoping for.
yes
We love videos like this Mehdi. Keep posting...

Yes, very much Yes! Any video is Good. Oh and by the way an house tour would be cool too. Thanks for all the fun, Ed.
Rene Schickbauer
You could probably get a very cheap used surround audio amplifier online or at a local thrift store. Playing a three channel phased shifted sine wave from your computer should give you all the watts you need, with the volume knob regulating the output power.
Mark Tea
Senpai has noticed you! =O
Secret updates - I love it. My friends are like, "have you seen this ElectroBoom guy" and I'm like, "yeah I've got access to all his secret update videos"... and they would be like, "wow where can I sign up". Of course I don't have any friends... but if I did - it could happen.
4:09 And now let me introduce fan without vanes ...

Try using some higher permeability iron instead of steel nails. Steel has very poor magnetic permeability compared to iron. Also, the stator stamping is much too thin, especially for the low permeability steel you are using.

Thanks a lot Nathan!
I love these updates! I just became a Patreon today and I love it! Keep up the great work!
looking forward to. Just finished lecture about electric motor last week.
You are a Legend! :D
Love the updates!
ElectroBOOM [Mehdi Sadaghdar]
You are right, I came to the same conclusion. My AC source sucks!
ElectroBOOM [Mehdi Sadaghdar]
... did I need to do all these?! :D
Looks good. Keep them coming
This one looks good. Just put everything so that this thing can't never work and then voila nobody has absolutely no idea but this damn thing will work. At the moment there are wrong colors for wires. It's visible from miles ...

Maybe try Y configuration, also check all the coils are wound in the correct direction. Maybe you need 6 coils arranged in pairs?
Maybe double check your connections? I don’t remember the details/specs, but maybe try the wiring you’re not trying (delta vs ‘Y’ wiring). Does the polarity of your 3 stator coils matter? Double check that you’re creating the rotating magnetic field...
Building a small AC induction motor is extremely hard, efficiency decreases rapidly with smaller size.
Or use much thicker wires, much lower number of turns!
Drive your motor directly! You need very high power at a relatively low frequency (try 5 or 10 Hz!) for creating enough flux inside the rotor which then can interact with the rotation of the flux. You need high voltage (maybe 10...20 V) at low freq, which is impossible to generate with a high kv motor.
Have you tried to calculate or measure anything? Do you have any idea what current could flow in your coils with this drive? Maybe 100 mA? (I=V/Z, Z=R+j*w*L, L=n*n*Al, Al~50...100 nH/turn^2) What flux density could it generate in the center? Can it penetrate into the core, or lenz's law repells most of it? (Do you have an idea of the torque-slip characteristics of an AC motor, and have you tried to figure out how to achieve maximum torque point? Do you use a homogenuous copper rotor, or is there an iron core? Try to calculate skin depth!)

Update and other less-fully-produced content is very welcome.

Yes! Love the update videos!
RMS
These short update videos would be awesome if they continue
Chuck Kirchner
Upvote updates.......
I love it. I'd love it more if it didn't feel like you were shaking me as you were showing me your motor, but I love the little updates. :D
yes, want MOAR! ❤️

The best kind of spam
This is absolutely liked and wanted 👍🏼 Every success is littered with numerous failures along the way!
elias
I like this videos and I would like to see more. Thank you very much for your awesome work!
Honestly I would do your initial testing with the ESC directly coupled to your home-brew motor. Get it working that way first, then go backwards with your generator.
John Bryant
Would love more of these type of posts!
Michael Mirsky
It's hard to see but your air gap looks too large. What is output voltage of your generator? Itlookhlike a pretty small generator so only a few volts?
Wow your lab really looks like an actual EE lab! =D
Stuart Young
If you're happy to make the extra content, seems we're all happy to watch it! Short clips is probably the key. Re: Not working - Things that don't work are often more instructive than if it just works first time. Sometimes the only way to truly understand something is by figuring out why what you've done doesn't work. PS: Keep up the great work!
Definitley do the updates! Hopefully soon my lab will be as tidy as yours.
Marcelo Henrique Gonçalves
We love the "Keep trying until things until it works" Strategy. Low planning, high pain.
hahaha , try empty toilet paper roll( looks like right size) with that foil wrap and use your fingers as bearings
poles work in pairs , noticed only 3 singles on stator with banding as a core ?? ,hard to see what rotor you have but you have to induce a rotating magnetic field(stator) into a shorted squirrel cage , try making one out of pill bottle, 5 hr energy drink or a sowing machine bobbin , whatever fits inside your stator and wrap it with 5 or so of aluminum foil and hang it from a string , pop can works awesome but your stator is too small if you want a squirrel cage rotor , just yank out it out of a shaded pole motor (cheap bathroom fans ) would maybe fit , tighter the better good luck
I, without telling you how to do the things I'm learning, post everything you can. I really enjoy your chan.

As someone else mentioned, check cliplead continuity. I take all mine apart and solder them. Is this meant to be an asynchronous or synchronous motor? The problem with synchronous is when the BLDC you are using as a 3 phase generator is turning slower, voltage/current is very low. But when it gets going faster, a synchronous AC motor may not be able to start up with such a high speed differential. I've had them do strange things like rotate backwards at a slower speed while growling. If asynchronous, maybe the stator poles are just not close enough to the rotor. Did you try to make some kind of squirrel cage, or just a cylinder of copper?
Hey Mehdi! I love these off-the-cuff videos. Hope to see more!
Richard Boyce
Yes please, nice to see work in progress
yes!
Adam Nash
Nice motor design. s there enough inductance in those stator coils? It looks pretty anemic to me. I think that may be your problem.
More short clips
Moar updates! Please.
Ron Jones
Dumb suggestion, but I have had no end of problems with clip leads. Check to make sure the wires in the clip leads are actually electrically connected to the alligator clip. Often they are poorly crimped. But, alas, I'm sure you would have checked that, you are much smarter than I!
Seán Byrne
Try the rotor from an aquarium pump if you have one as it easily comes out (for cleaning). The rotor is magnetic, i.e. will cling to steel.
Jay
I like the updates.
King Parker
Yeah, we all assumed everything you made came out perfectly the first time and all the "accidents" were scripted.
I luv itt
I like updates! More stuff like this would be cool.
I agree with Michael and Joseph; seeing your "backstage" development techniques and level of frustration management makes me happy to know that my Patreon subscription is well worth it. A successful project usually is composed of some missteps and troubleshooting phases; your thought process helps us to better understand our own. I hope you do more of these "behind the curtain" episodes.
Cool, good idea!. .... You and Colin Furze should do a project together that would be awesome! it looks like he is up for collaborating with other YouTubers , he done a video with the "CarThrottle" guys, was funny https://youtu.be/kNZV3Bry5UU ... one of his latest videos he makes an electric drift trike https://youtu.be/otlR05QZRrU - he doesn't get it right first time in this one! :) he does mention he is looking for cool things to electrify! Its a sign!...well at least worth a thought? :)
Yes we like them very much.. make us feel special :-) thanks
The videos are great! You should characterize the generator by dividing open circuit voltage with short circuit current to determine source impedance. If it is too high it might explain why you have troubles with your motor.
Bro, we like hearing anything you have to say. I signed up for The Rectifier hurting himself with zappy all the time, but ended up staying through a walking tour of Canada. So this works too. Just keep in touch, ya know? We like you here.
Kostas Karanatsis
yea, updates are always welcome. video or photos :)

Update videos - Thumbs up.
Sam Wittsell
I do love these updates. Keep doing them!
Love the updates!!!! As long as you dont mind doing them. Great work!!!

Updates and videos exclusively for patrons seems like a great idea! By advertising content exclusive to Patreon you may get more people to subscribe!
Dukefazon
Sure, any updates are nice, keep 'em coming!
I like it, very cool. It's like a backstage pass. :)
Will watch updates, I like it!
Jason Hoffman
I like the smug sense of superiority that Patreon-only updates give me over the youtube hoi polloi.
Looks like a wire coil rotor. With an induction motor the rotor has permanent magnets embedded in it. Can't really tell from the build but it doesn't look like anything but copper wire. Try making a simple rotor that is just two magnets hot-glued to a shaft to see if you even get movement.
Love the updates, failure is part of engineering
Marcelo Henrique Gonçalves
Just keep trying different things until it works.
Mike oliver
Love the updates.
Failure is the birth of drive and discovery
Dan
Updates always welcome! S.P.A.M.= Special Prototype Amateur Motor?
Failure and iteration is the soul of engineering! I enjoy updates on the process and thinking, not just the slick finished thing.
Keep em coming. Looks like fun.
Love the updates
Did you try rebooting your router? Works for me every time.
Apuis Retsam
OK, seriously now. I like the update. The engine looks really nice. Professional. Pity it doesn't work, I know the pain. I work as a programmer. Like this job but it is really annoying. Nothing ever works the first try. If someone manages to do something complex that works the first time, it a festival and the whole office drinks 3 days straight to celebrate it ;)
ElectroBOOM [Mehdi Sadaghdar]
I'm thinking to drill that copper and make it a squirrel cage. Maybe that works. I will change the rotor to magnet to see if I have rotating fields from stator at all. Troubleshooting time!
I like the updates idea. Looking forward to more. Also you want to debunk this or is there something to it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_GUem5ADQs
Robs Repairs
Quirky updates are great.
Apuis Retsam
You should use magnets not coiles! Engines needs magnets, thats how they work. Damn, your stupid.
ElectroBOOM [Mehdi Sadaghdar]
I checked the direction, more would help if I also raise the voltage to keep the current the same. Right now my coils are 1 ohm each.
Are the windings on your rotor properly set up for a 3-phase AC motor? (I'm not a EE, just throwing ideas out there)
Short updates are always welcome!
Richard Robinson
Updates are all good.
Roland Respondek
AC motors destroyed my head when i was in my electronics engineer apparentice ship. The squirrel-cage looks quite odd, but i think you figured it out fine. However i think the amount of poles is not quite enough is it?
I like the updates.
Awesome! Have you tried changing the direction of the coils or even adding more?
Yessss.. gimmi da updates..
Updates, random thoughts… just anything from you would be great to watch.
It would be pretty neat to see the entire build process, so keep them coming!
Awesome! Keep them coming!
I love stuff like this! As Ben said, keep the updates coming!
Alfred
Always!
Ben Gruver
Keep the updates coming!
