You forgot the circle of salt. I'm not sure what it does, but there always needs to be a circle of salt. I believe you're supposed to stand in the middle of it while you do ya thang, whatever that may be.

Those are brilliant! Expensive though. You can make your own (or at least, something that will give similar results), with a stiff-walled box of some type, quite a lot less eggcrate foam than Mehdi shows in his picture, and a hot glue gun. Not as effective as the SE product, but a hell of a lot cheaper! There's lots of tutorials around online.

A long long time ago a friend of mine worked on a moderately successful Australian short film called "Three Chords and a Wardrobe". The title was a quote from the "self-obsessed musician" lead character, regarding his beliefs about how to create the perfect pop song. The catch is that you have to be naked while recording inside the wardrobe, to avoid the mic picking up the rustling of your clothes. Hilarity (rather predictably ) ensued.

You'll get better results if you turn the egg crate side inwards.

As an audio nerd, I have no problem with this, keep it up! A band called Trivium recorded the vocals to their song Shattering the Skies Above in blanket-lined closet (much to their neighbors dismay) and the recording came out perfect!

This isn’t as unusual as your expression seems to indicate you think it is. When I worked in the video studio we’d make a voiceover sound booth under the light grid using light stands and packing blankets because in spite of the fact that the whole sound stage was padded with the same acoustic foam tile you’re under here, it was still too echo-y!

Your closet is HUGE compared to most closet-recording Youtubers! Try recording from your kids closet.

Why not relocate the laptop and use a fanless lightweight machine as a remote control? For example you could use a Raspberry Pi with VNC to act as an IP driven KVM for your laptop, eliminating the fan noise as well. Can't do much about the drilling without substantially more isolation.
