Thats a really cool feature, I wonder how that happened. Is it because macs don't usually have a password set for root because it can't be used for login normally? How do you screw up a dialog so badly? And how does the privilege change work in macos? There is no password supplied, so something that is allready running with root privilege must give its thumbs up withot any checking at all. If I was a security researcher, I'd go looking for that :)

It is something new. The existence of other vulnerabilities (or the ability to open a system, get into storage and plant stuff there) is far different from clicking a button a few times while the system is running unattended. In one case, you need time and/or you're quite visible during the breach, in the other case it looks like you touched the computer for 3 seconds.

You can lock down your system against physical access, but it takes some work. For example the ones above will not work if you don't allow booting from a different medium and lock down the boot sequence. Encrypting your harddisk helps too.

There isn't really anything new here, other than Apple has made it easier than usual. Any system running Windows, Mac, Linux and BSD on laptops and server can be broken into in less than 10 minutes if there is physical access to the machine. So don't leave your machine with strangers, it might get lonely and broken into.
