Tribulations
Lea Hunt, Paladin of Pofmis, the Chainbreaker, Goddess of Freedom, sighed, as she rubbed her swolen belly. Just a couple months ago, she had given birth to her firstborn child, a Half-Gnoll female. Worst of all were the ‘faithful’. The religions of the old world would call her relationships shameless and sinful and say that they were going to hell when they died. Hell. As if she needed to die in order to experience hell. She had seen more of hell’s true face on Earth than they could even dream of. Hell was not a place where one went when one died. Hell was the twisted webs of evil men, and it very much existed on earth.
Her descent into hell had started one afternoon, in the fall of her Senior year of High School. What should have been a happy time, as she finished up her high school career and looked forward to new experiences in college and going forward to earn her degree and begin a career in the ‘real world’ and all that stuff had turned into a nightmare. Her hopes and dreams had been shattered, torn, and ripped asunder by someone she had never expected to do that to her, as she fell deeper and deeper into his power.
Oh, she wasn’t so naïve as to say she didn’t have any responsibility for it. It was, after all, her mistakes, her sins, that had allowed that evil man to gain power over her in the first place. If she had not made those mistakes, hell would not have come to claim her.
She could still remember that horrible, horrible day, the day when everything she had thought or dreamed for the future had come crashing down. Romantic thoughts of ‘true love’ or ‘saving herself’ died that day. And her tormenter had made sure that she knew that every trial and tribulation she suffered was her own fault.
It had been a normal day in the fall of her senior year, when she got a message from Coach Thomas that he needed to see her after school. In hindsight, she should have run, and never shown up. Instead, she trusted. Coach Thomas was in charge of the volleyball team, after all, and she was one of the rising seniors. Maybe he was going to offer her the Captain’s spot?
How naïve she was. How stupid. Like a lamb to the slaughter, she went to the Coach’s office in the back of the gym. Everyone was already leaving for the day. The football team was off on the field, but they had their own entrance and exit to the locker rooms from the field side, so they didn’t need to tromp through the halls in their cleats. “Hi, Coach! You wanted to see me?”
Coach Thomas looked up from where he had been adjusting one of the digital cameras they used to film games so they could study the tape and see what went right and what went wrong. But she did as she was told, and shut the door before sitting in one of the two chairs on her side of the Coach’s desk. Coach Thomas looked her in the eye, and said, in a tone she couldn’t quite identify, “I’m afraid that something has come to my attention, and I wanted to talk with you privately about it, to keep it from causing you too much embarrassment in front of your friends.”
That hadn’t sounded good, even at the time. Was she in trouble? She hadn’t done anything wrong at school, so there shouldn’t be any problems, right? Her expression must have conveyed her worry, because Coach didn’t wait for a response, instead reaching into the drawer of his desk and taking out a file folder. He rose from his seat as he tossed the folder down in front of her like a proclamation of doom. “I want you to look at this.” That was all he said. That was all he needed to say.
She barely registered him walking around the desk as she opened the folder, and saw pictures of herself! Each picture was of her, and she was at Walmart. Why did Coach have these pictures? The captain stepped forward.
“I’m sorry, but the Demon made us sign a contract.”
Lea knew hell, all right. And, once more, it had come to visit her.

I want to say that in reality I would never condone rape and I’m all for the rules about cruel punishment being bent in regards to those rapists who have irrefutable proof against them. But I did enjoy this story, especially because it allows what the soldiers have to do to be glossed over in the main story without being a cop out.
