"Let my mom judge." He pushed the phone forward, and Harry caught the image in the mirror's reflection. "Who's hotter, mom? Him... or him?"
A shirtless man stood in the living room, wearing fireman pants and a jacket with no shirt underneath. His smooth muscles were impressive, but his expression looked pained, as if struggling to go to the bathroom or something. When Tracey switched the image, it showed another shirtless man sitting at a desk with a hundred-thousand-dollar Rolex on his wrist.
Mom frowned, looking at the phone, then at sister Harry and her friends. "You think these boys are handsome?" A sound of amusement escaped her, and Harry saw the friends' smiles fading, becoming more awkward. "Hairless, hopeless, scarless... These are boys playing at being men. You think real men post on Instagram for likes? Hmph."
She scoffed derisively and handed the phone back, turning forward with a hint of a smile at the corner of her lips as her fingertips brushed the back of Harry's hand.
"Shows what you know," Tracey said irritably, but Harry noticed she and her friends were quieter for the rest of the drive and didn't share their phones back and forth anymore.
As they approached the cabin, Harry rolled down the window and took a deep breath of the mountain air. Not much had changed around the lake, and he smiled at the familiar sights. The Copper Kettle Market was still there, with its faded sign and sagging awning, along with the diner where they had breakfast on the last morning at the cabin.
The girls glanced around the old buildings with furrowed brows, which brightened when they saw the lake. Shimmering and blue, it stretched far across the horizon as they drove along the lakeside road. Their cabin was on a peninsula near the campgrounds, in a quiet area but close enough to bike into town.
On the water's edge was a small, one-story wooden cabin with one large room, a tiny kitchenette, and a large deck that wrapped around the lake's edge. The best part for Harry was the dock attached to the cabin and the storage where he kept his jet ski.
"Finally!" Tracey said as Harry pulled up in front of the house.
Pushing the door open, she and the girls jumped out, stretching and groaning from the cramped back seat.
"Everything looks the same," mom said with a tight smile as she stepped out and looked around the property. "The bushes need trimming, but the new owners can worry about that after the sale." She walked around the outer edge of the property where the road extended, inspecting it while Harry unloaded the luggage from the car. The girls explored the deck. "Let me open it, Tracey," mom rattled the keys as she unlocked the cabin door and pulled back her head, frowning as the door creaked open. "This place needs to be aired out."
She was right. The combination of mothballs and old dust gave the small cabin a musty aroma. The girls set to work with surprising energy, opening windows and airing out blankets, while Harry went to check on the jet ski.
Harry had bought a standing jet ski when he was a teenager, with money earned from delivering newspapers. Growing up and watching the older boys ride their jet skis, he had saved for years to afford one. By the time he had it, the older boys had moved away, but he still spent a few years riding all over the lake, learning to jump and dive.
The jet ski looked just as he had left it, but it had been over a year, and he worried about the fuel. Pulling it out, he emptied the fuel tank and refilled it, then started the engine and burned the last remnants of old fuel. When it purred like a master, he tied it to the dock and returned to the cabin.
The girls wasted no time changing into bikinis. Harry found all three lying on the deck, soaking up the last rays of warmth before the shadows lengthened. It was hard not to stare as he walked by, especially at Daphne. The girl's chest defied gravity even without a bra, and their heavy swell beneath the black material made Harry's fingers twitch.
Fleur wore a tiny white bikini that barely concealed her tight body. sister wore something even smaller, but Harry forced himself not to look in her direction.
"Can you take my water bottle inside?" Tracey asked Harry without lifting her head, and he grunted in agreement.
When he went inside, Harry found his stepmom sitting in the old rocking chair, while something sizzled in a pan beside her. She raised an eyebrow at him as he grabbed the water bottle, and he saw her eyes scan the teenagers lying just beyond the windows.
"Quite a view," she noted, with more than a hint of dryness in her voice.
When Harry looked through the windows, the lake was a sharp glare, the mountains invisible behind it, but the sunbathing girls were perfectly visible.
"I'm going for a ride," Harry said, ignoring the blush warming his cheeks and the sly smile that curled her thick lips. "When will dinner be ready?"
"At least an hour," she nodded. "Have fun and be careful... Don’t go too far and stay where I can see you."
Harry rolled his eyes at being treated like a child and grabbed his life jacket.
"Thanks," Tracey said, standing up as Harry's feet hit the deck.
She shaded her eyes and reached out with her other hand, taking the water bottle from him and drinking deeply. Harry couldn't help but let his eyes drop to admire her smooth stomach and long legs. She smiled as she set the bottle down. "Fleur, what were you saying about Harry?" Tracey's eyes sparkled with mischief as she looked at her friend.
"Nothing, God, Tracey, you're such a brat!" Fleur's face turned scarlet, the redness spreading down her neck and chest. When she saw Harry looking, she flushed even more and rolled onto her stomach.
"She said you look stupid with your mouth open like that," Daphne said, her dark eyes fixed on Harry, and Tracey burst out laughing.
"Are you sure you’re friends?" Harry asked, "She’s got brains, beauty, and charm, while you only have... those."
Harry scoffed derisively, nodding at her chest, and Daphne's jaw dropped, lifting a hand to cover her breasts, a hopeless task as they bulged from all sides of her bikini top. For half a second, Harry thought he had gone too far, but Tracey laughed even harder than the first time, and even Fleur joined in.
Daphne glared at Harry and flipped her hair over to one side of her head, pretending to ignore him as he pulled off his shirt. Harry was about to put on his life jacket when something heavy thumped from inside the cabin, and he looked up. The glare was too bright to see much, but he noticed his stepmom standing quickly with a book in her hand.
"I’m fine!" she called from inside.
Tracey and the others turned to look as well, but Harry's sister just shook her head and turned back. Harry felt eyes on his back as he pulled on the jacket, but when he turned around, she and Daphne were staring straight ahead, eyes hidden behind sunglasses. The feeling didn't leave him even as he climbed onto the jet ski and pushed away from the dock.
The water's surface was warm after the hot day, and Harry's lazy kicks brought him to deeper waters. He held his breath and released it in relief as the engine started without a hitch, the jet of water propelling him forward. Within a minute, he was on top, skimming the lake, exploring coves and inlets in their corner of the lake.
Not much had changed over the last few years. One cabin had a new roof, another was under renovation, but the rest were part of a sleepy little retirement community. Harry glanced over the campsites and laughed at how empty they were.
"Tracey and her friends won’t be happy," Harry said to himself, knowing how much the girls had looked forward to trolling boys. From what he saw, there were only a few families that looked like they were packing up. It wasn't until he saw overgrown grass and signs warning of snakes that he realized the owners had abandoned the place. The same thing had happened to most resorts in the area.
With all the fires in recent years, owners were either selling out or waiting for insurance buyouts. The community was dying and would eventually disappear. It was sad, but there was no industry here, and every year, fewer boaters were willing to trek into the mountains.
Harry had the water to himself and burned through several gallons of gas, regaining his balance as he jumped his own wakes. When he judged that an hour had passed, he returned to the dock and pushed the jet ski up the carpeted ramp he had built one summer. With a healthy ache in his muscles, he hung the jacket to dry and grabbed the towel someone had left out for him.
When Harry entered the cabin, it was bright with cheerful light and conversation. The girls were lounging on the bed, playing a board game, while his mom mixed salad dressing.
"Set the table, will you, Harry?"
They gathered around the small table and dug into the spaghetti and sauce. mom Harry wasn't the best cook, but she made a great meat sauce, and it was a happy, well-fed group that sat on the deck, watching the last rays of the sun disappear.
