So since it's gonna be a little bit before Oni reaches the duo, I wanted to have them do little mini-adventures in-between the Oni traveling segments, but I couldn't think of anything that really sounded fun to dooooo. Buuuut two of my friends during a VC encouraged me to try doing Watermelon Showdown as one of these adventures. I didn't think doing WS would be all that interesting at first (I thought it might be kind of redundant and like 3 pages long , similar to Forest Bus), but when it actually came time to sketch the layout it became really interesting.
It was fun trying to figure out how best to turn it into a comic, definitely took a lot of inspiration from the Ranma 1/2 manga (which i've been getting back into recently I used to really love it) when it came to composition and such. Overall I think it came out pretty good, and it officially canonizes WS as a part of the main series, not that I think there was a lot of doubt about that (I think I made a tweet saying that it took place a few weeks before Oni arrives) but it's nice to have it here I think.
