Riley Smith found the package waiting by the front door when he came home from high school. It was a large brown box, waist high to him, and the label had his name on it.
“But,” he said, reading more of the label. “I never ordered anything from Curses & Crafts… whatever that is.”
Sweat was forming on his forehead, so he decided he would rather figure out this mystery in the comfort of air conditioning. He opened the front door and put his backpack down by the stairs before going back out to carry in the box. Fortunately, it was lighter than he feared it might be, so he decided to carry it all the way upstairs to his bedroom where he could open it up in some privacy. Although he was home alone at the moment, he knew his mother would be bringing his little sister home from preschool soon, and Alice had a tendency to bug him when he was trying to concentrate.
Figuring that more useful information could be found within the box, he found his pocket knife and cut the lid open. Inside there was a sheet of paper, a receipt, mostly submerged within a sea of packing peanuts. He might have easily plucked the sheet out without disturbing the contents of the box, but his curiosity got the better of him. He needed to see what was hidden beneath all of that packaging. Afterall, he rationalized, it was addressed to him. He had a right to look.
However, before he could plunge his hands into the peanuts, he heard the front door of the house open.
“Riley?” his mother shouted up the stairs. “You home, dear?”
“I’m here!” he shouted back. “Up in my room!”
“I need to do some grocery shopping for dinner. Please keep an eye on Alice until I get back.”
“Okay!” he replied.
He heard the door shut downstairs, followed by little footsteps running up the stairs all the way into his sister’s bedroom.
Confident that Alice would be fine in there on her own for a little while, he turned his attention back to the mystery package. He poked his fingers into the peanuts near the walls of the box and soon found the edges of a solid object within. He gripped it and lifted it upwards. As the peanuts slid away, he saw that he was holding the roof of a dollhouse. After shaking off the remaining packaging from it, he set the enormous toy down beside the box on the carpet.
It was a magnificently detailed old-fashioned dollhouse with a porch and gables, the roof painted to imitate dark shingles and the outer walls painted yellow with white trim. Lowering himself to his hands and knees, Riley peeked through the windows to find there were boxes inside, which he assumed contained doll-sized furniture to decorate the rooms. The closer he looked the more he was impressed. The shutters and windows were all capable of moving, the doors too. He reached down to touch the front door handle, and immediately pulled his hand away when it gave him a light static shock.
Sitting back, he shook his hand to try to relieve the tingle that was spreading through it, but the sensation only extended further up his arm to his shoulder, where the tingle slowed down somewhat while still continuing its spread through his torso.
“What’s happening?” he cried, looking down at his tingling hand to see that it appeared to be shrinking. He held it up in his other hand and found that the tingling one had already been reduced to half the size of his regular hand and was still shrinking. With growing panic, he realized that his arm was getting smaller and shorter as well.
The tingle spread further, traveling up his neck to encompass his whole head. The world seemed to expand around him, the ceiling and walls of his room receded away as his body below seemed to expand. After a moment of confusion, he realized what was actually happening. His head was shrinking, just like his hand and arm were. He tried to stand up, but his balance was too confused. He went to grab his phone, but his other arm had begun to shrink as well before he could get a hand in his pocket. Soon, his whole body above the waist was tingling and shrinking smaller, his shirt hanging more and more loosely on him as his torso became too small to fit in it.
The tingle continued relentlessly, spreading down through his hips to his legs until it reached his toes, and then he could feel his whole body shrinking with the upper parts having become much smaller faster than the lower half. He looked down at seemingly enormous legs and giant feet as he held up his unevenly shrunken hands, finding one still half as small as the other. Soon his head and arms were swallowed up within the relative darkness of the fabric of his shirt. While unable to see what was happening below, he could feel his feet shrink out of his shoes and recede up the legs of his jeans.
Riley fought to escape his own clothes, but whatever progress he made to pull himself out was erased by the shrinking of his body. Moments later, he felt as if his upper body had returned to its normal proportions, even as his legs and feet felt relatively humongous. Soon, though, even his lower half had shrunk to the proportionate size of his upper half. Disorientated and feeling as if he were naked and wrapped in an enormous blanket, he crawled toward where he thought the bottom of his shirt was. Eventually, he found the edge of the fabric above him and emerged into the light.
The first thing he noticed was the yellow house in front of him. Maybe it was the fact that it seemed normal-sized from his perspective that his attention was immediately drawn to it. Whereas, everything else around him seemed impossibly huge. The landscape of rumpled fabric surrounding him seemed as if it were sized to fit a giant, the shoes appearing large enough that he could fit in them like canoes. He stood up unsteadily on the thick shirt fabric and uneven carpet below and turned his attention to the room above him, his mind struggling to accept that he was still in his own bedroom. The whole place seemed larger than the biggest arena he had even been in, the furniture having grown to the size of buildings.
Although Riley was terrified at having shrunk, wonder at this new perspective overpowered his fear for a moment. He looked at his bed, unable to see the top of his mattress now but able to see the dust and old junk he had pushed beneath it—sports equipment, old toys, old shoes—all looking like the discarded possessions of a giant now. He considered exploring the floor around him, but he found his legs unwilling to move.
“H-help!” he said, his voice barely more than a worried whisper.
“Riley?” his sister yelled from down the hall. “Can I have a snack, please?”
Heavy footsteps shook the world around him, getting louder and heavier as they approached the huge door to the bedroom. A thunderous series of knocks followed, striking the door far above him.
“A-Alice?” he said, horrified at the thought of the giant standing behind the door. He wanted to run and hide, but his legs still felt paralyzed by fear.
Then, the door swung open, like the wall of a building swinging open on a hinge. He gasped at the sight of the giant that entered his room, standing seemingly 50 feet taller than him. He barely recognized his sister from this perspective and at this size, but it was unmistakably her voice that said, “Riley? Where are you?”
Alice took a step closer to him, her giant foot shaking the floor around him like an earthquake. Fearing that he might be accidentally crushed to death by the colossal preschooler, he screamed, “Stop! I’m down here!”
Alice paused and looked around confused until her eyes spotted him in the middle of his pile of giant clothes.
Riley tensed his whole body. The sheer size of the girl terrified him too much to move. She strode closer and crouched down above him to get a closer look at him. The warmth of her breath blowing past him as she asked, “Is that a doll?”
After another moment of hesitation, he worked up the courage to speak. “Alice,” he said. “It’s me, Riley.”
“Riley?” she said, squinting at him curiously. “How come you’re so small?”
“I dunno,” he replied, shrugging. “I think the dollhouse shrunk me, somehow.”
Alice turned her attention to the dollhouse on the floor behind him. “Wow!” she cried, and dropped to her hands and knees above him. He stumbled and fell onto his back in response. He lay there fearfully as she crawled over him and took a seat beside the dollhouse. “This is so pretty!” she said as she examined this new toy, totally ignoring him.
“Alice, stop!” Riley cried, as he rose to his feet and stumbled over the folds of his giant jeans as he ran to her. “Don’t touch it! It might shrink you too!”
“Really?” she replied looking back at him. She sounded excited by the prospect.
Riley was powerless to do anything but watch as she figured out how to open the back wall of the house to reach the boxed-up furniture within. Then, she began unpacking them and decorating the rooms, seemingly having forgotten about her shrunken brother altogether.
Frustration was overtaking his fear at last. He walked up to her and shoved her tree-trunk sized thigh with his little hands, shouting, “Alice, listen to me!”
She appeared to awaken from a trance and looked down at him.
“I need you to help me,” he said. “I need to read the paper that’s in the box. There must be something on it that could explain what’s going on.”
She smiled down at him in a way that indicated that she had not grasped the gravity of the situation. “You’ll make a great doll, Riley,” she said, reaching an enormous hand down to him. He held up his hands in defense.
He shrieked as her fingers wrapped around his middle, each one as thick as his own arms. “Here,” she said. “Do you want me to put it on you?”

Riley sat on the bed in the dollhouse as his mother sat on his own bed, reading the note she had taken out of the package. After spending a few minutes just comprehending her son’s transformations, she had calmed down and focused on finding a solution to this problem. “Unbelievable,” his mother said, taking out her phone and dialing a number she read off of the note she had fished out of the package. After a minute passed while listening to her phone, she sighed and explained, “I called the company, but they’ve got me on hold.” With the phone still pressed to her ear, she held up the note for Riley and said, “I examined the whole thing, and I think I figured out what happened. Seems like there was a mixup with the delivery. Apparently, this dollhouse had been ordered by a woman also named Riley Smith who lives on Oak Street across town, not here on Old Oak Street. For some strange reason, this other Riley wants to be transformed into a doll.”
“D-does it say how to turn me back to normal?” Riley asked, wincing at the sound of his words coming out in his sister’s voice. He had been avoiding looking in the mirror again since his mother’s arrival, hoping to deny the fact that he had been transformed into his sister’s twin, at least from the neck up.
Turning her attention back to her phone, his mother held up her finger to indicate that he should be quiet. “Hello,” she said to whomever was speaking on the phone with her. “Is this customer service?”
She listened quietly to the response and said, “Well, I’ve got a major complaint for you about one of your products.”
Riley could only wait and listen as his mother chewed out the Curses & Crafts customer service rep for the dollhouse turning her son into a “freakish doll woman.” Although he knew she had not meant to insult him and her description was accurate, he hated that his mother had described him that way. After a long period of listening, his mother sighed and said, “Well, I suppose that is acceptable. We’ll deliver the package, and then you’ll mail us the coupon. Right?”
She listened to the response.
“Fine then, thank you. Have a good day,” she said and hung up.
“Well?” Riley prompted her.
His mother set down her phone and looked down at him. “The deal is you get a coupon for a free item from their website so long as we deliver the package to the correct address. Seems like they’ve been dealing with a lot of complaints, and they just want to keep us from suing them.”
“Mom,” Riley moaned, sounding even more like a bratty little girl. “That’s not what I meant. I want to go back to normal. When can I be myself again?”
“Oh,” she said. “That’s no problem. Apparently, the woman who ordered the dollhouse wanted to stay doll-sized overnight, so the spell won’t wear off until…” She checked the note from the box. “...two hours after you wake up in the morning or two hours after sunrise, whichever comes last.”
Riley was stunned. “You mean I’m stuck like this until tomorrow morning?”
“I’m afraid so.”
“Can’t you at least make me a boy again?” he asked. “Alice made me look like her. Can’t you undo that?”
She shook her head, sadly. “According to the note, the spell only allows someone to reshape your body for the first hour. After that, it seems that the magic only has enough power left to return you to normal when it wears off.”
“Really?”
She nodded and said, “I suppose you could try touching the door again, but that’s not supposed to work. Apparently, the magic needs five or six days to recharge before it can be used again.”
“Great,” he said, lying down flat on the doll bed to stare up at the dollhouse ceiling. “I guess I’m staying this way for the night.”
“Hey,” his mother said, “I know that you’re not enjoying this much, but you just need to tough it out until tomorrow. I’ll keep Alice and Dad away and bring up some dinner for you later.”
He replied with a heavy sigh, not taking his eyes off of the ceiling. He just listened as his giant mother stood up from his bed and shook the dollhouse with her footsteps.
“Here,” she said as her knees appeared outside the open wall of the dollhouse.
He was startled to see her huge hand holding his giant phone enter the bedroom at the foot of the bed. She set down his phone, leaning it against the wall sideways like a television.

He sat up and frowned. “I think I need to use the toilet,” he admitted.

He retrieved his phone from the dollhouse and checked his reflection with the selfie camera, confirming that he still had his sister’s innocent young face, incongruously positioned above his teen boy shoulders.
“What did I do to deserve this?” he pondered. He set his phone down and settled in to wait for this last transformation to wear off. As he waited, his mind wandered, thinking over the whole experience. “If one change had to stick around, I’d much rather have kept that body instead of this face,” he admitted. Soon, he found himself fantasizing about those breasts, wishing he had another chance to finish what he had started last night. For a moment, he even considered touching the dollhouse door once more in an attempt to start the magic over again, but he immediately chided himself for even thinking of it.
After what felt like an eternity, he finally sensed his head transforming, growing and reshaping. Checking his reflection in his phone again, he watched as his sister’s features grew until they had become the shape of his own familiar face again.
He sighed in relief. “That’s better,” he said and was startled at first by the relatively low pitch of his voice. As soon as he was confident that everything was the way it was supposed to be, he felt not satisfied but strangely hollow. As happy as he was to be back to normal, some part of him was disappointed that such a strange experience had come to an end. The excitement and novelty was over. He was just an ordinary teen, now.
Feeling somewhat lost, he decided to do something instead of just sitting there, so he put his clothes back on, the ones he had been wearing the day before. After that, he had erased all evidence that something magical had occurred in his bedroom.
Someone knocked on his bedroom door.
“Yes?” he said.
“Are you decent?” his mother asked from behind the door.
“Come in,” he said.
She entered, smiling. “Look at you,” she said. “Thank goodness you’re okay.”
“Yeah,” he said, trying to sound upbeat. “Took a bit, but I’m back to normal.”
“All right, then,” his mother said. “Let’s get that dollhouse packed up again before something else happens.”
“Sure,” he said, and they set about maneuvering the magic house back into its box.

Riley rode with his mother as she drove across town to deliver the package to the other Riley. When they arrived at her house, she met them outside as if she had been waiting for their arrival. She seemed somewhat embarrassed even as she welcomed them in to carry the box into her house, so they did not linger long. Riley recognized something familiar about her barely concealed excitement over the magic item she now possessed.
Staring out the window as the car drove away, wishing that he had thought of some excuse to keep the dollhouse, Riley sighed.
“Hey,” his mother said. “Have you thought of what you want to order?”
“What order?” he asked, curiously.
“You’ve got a coupon for a free item from the magic company, remember,” she said. “...to make up for the mixup.”
“Oh,” he said, having almost completely forgotten. He had been so upset at the time that the free item offer had barely registered in his mind. “I don’t know,” he said, although he had some ideas. “I’ll have to see what they’re selling.”
His mother glanced at him, recognizing his growing excitement. “Be reasonable,” she said. “Don’t go ordering something… inappropriate.”
“Mom…”
“It’s your free item, so I’m not going to tell you what to do,” she said. “Still, don’t order something we’re all going to regret.”
He nodded, but he worried that he was going to disappoint her.
