Holding his chin with adorable seriousness as he pondered what to do now, Chris said, “We oughta go somewhere public with a lotta people just doing random stuff.” Then, his face lit up, indicating he had just had a bright idea. “I know,” he said. “Let’s go to the mall. This time of day, there’ll be a bunch of rich old people wandering around. Might be fun to mess with ‘em.”
Tim shrugged. “Sounds good to me,” he said. “Only, I don’t feel like walking all that way, and I don’t have a car.”
“You could just… you know, give yourself a car.”
Tim winced at the idea of using the app to enrich himself. That seemed like it would be abusing the gift of the app. “I suppose we both have bikes in the garage now,” he said.
“Oh,” Chris said, sounding disappointed. “I never learned how to ride a bike.”
Tim felt sorry for the kid. “Well,” he said. “Let’s check and see what’s there. We’ll figure something out.”
Tim’s bicycle was in the garage where he had left it. However, there were now a pair of shiny metal stunt pegs at the axles of both wheels.
“Whoa,” Chris said. “That’s cool. I can ride on the pegs while you pedal.”
Tim stood the bike up and straddled it. After a few failed attempts to coordinate their balance as Tim began pedaling, they eventually began their ride to the mall. It took Tim more effort than usual to move them both together on the bike, but Chris was small enough that Tim could manage it without even breaking a sweat.
Eventually, they arrived at the vast parking lot of the mall and rode up to where Tim knew there was a bike rack.
Chris hopped off and said, “Thanks for the ride. I’m giving you the highest rating, and I’ll be sure to leave a nice tip.”
Tim chuckled as he chained up his bike.
“So,” Chris said, sounding more serious. “You got any ideas of what you want to try with the app?”
Tim walked with Chris to the door of the mall as he considered a response. “I dunno,” he admitted. “I guess I’ll come up with something when I find a target.”
They entered the cool air of the mall and headed for the center, all the while scanning the sparse crowd of people they passed, searching for someone they could mess with.
