The book is somewhat darker than the movie, yes; also, the original movie is only the first half of the book. The book also took a bit more effort to point out that the main character was Bastian Balthazar Bux, and the previous owner of the book was Carl Conrad Coreander, and to imply that the repeated initials weren't coincidence and may have been why Carl let Bastian steal the book in the first place.
