Lois sat down across from her and slapped her palm into Karen’s. Immediately they began straining against each other. The building itself creaked and shifted, vibrations in the air chiseling out weakened areas of the superstructure so that dribbles of plaster rained throughout the building. Wallpaper curled. Floorboards groaned. Tiles shook. A few old pipes gave and showered water on anyone in the vicinity. The apartment building quickly emptied out, with someone pulling a fire alarm to add to the cacophony. It hid the noise of Lois and Karen grinding their teeth together.
Then the windows began to shatter. Bursting like cherry bombs with the fuses blown down. Shards of glass simply jumped out of their frames to scatter inside and outside the building. Clark felt like running to warn someone about the cataclysm, or maybe apologize, but there was no taking his eyes off this titanic conflict. It was like finally seeing an unstoppable force paired off with an immovable object. Veins stood out on either woman’s struggling arm. Their muscles swelled like explosions in slow-motion. The fabric of Lois’s sleeve split at the bicep, then continued to tear itself open, rent to shreds by the awesome power it’d been tailored to contain.
Finally their locked fists began to quiver. The white knuckles shifted back and forth, each woman’s strength ebbing before she rallied and redoubled her effort. The shocking friction of their exertion became heat lightning, crackling away from their joined hands to blast their surroundings. Scorch marks soon encircled them. More bolts of fidgeting electricity demolished Lois’s clothes, but were unable to affect her superstrong body. They still fried the sweat she was awash in, sending wisps of steam coursing into the air. Karen suffered the same fate, her expression contorting and wincing even more at the painful strikes, but she didn’t relent.
Slowly the momentum went to Lois. She pushed Karen’s fist down an inch. Then another inch. Their coupled fists inexorably rolled to the side, Lois’s hand on top, Karen’s about to be pinned down.
Karen reapplied herself. She literally roared with effort as she fought her way back to the twelve o’clock position on the clock… even got to eleven o’clock, with a shrill laugh bursting out of her when she saw that she was winning. She clenched her teeth, bit her lip, but even though she dug her teeth in hard enough to draw blood, there was no reversing the progress she was making. “Anything?” Lois prodded, delighting in being able to hold Karen’s hand within inches of losing, with Karen not able to do anything about it despite all her struggling.
