“Comin’ right up!” Harley chirped, pushing herself off the counter and going to the coffee machine.
Dick was in the kitchen, on the other side of the island that had the coffee machine on it. He looked at her through the dangling order slips. “Don’t bring him anything if he talks to you like that.”
“It’s fine,” Harley insisted.
She did hate it when men called her that. But what could she do? He wouldn’t tip her for a lecture about respectful interaction.
“Hey hot stuff,” the big trucker whispered as Harley dropped more coffee into his cup. “I’ve got my rig parked out back, you know, in the shadows. And there’s nobody around.” He looked theatrically around the empty diner.
“Good, maybe you can sleep it off in there,” Harley said, setting the glass pot down on the counter.
The big guy was still staring at her; Harley looked back steadily into his beady eyes.
“Not alone,” he said, moving his hand onto Harley’s arm. Her skin went goose-pimply with revulsion when he began stroking her forearm with his fat, stubby fingers. “Come on. You can give me a quickie and be back before your boss knows you’re not taking a smoke break. I’ll pay a lot better than I would for this lousy hash you sling…”
Harley’s eyes narrowed. She picked up the coffee cup and poured out its fresh contents onto his wrist.
“Ahh!” the trucker cried, jerking his hand away and shaking it wildly.
“Ah, look, ya finished your coffee! Guess you can go now!”
“You bitch!” the trucker wailed, prying himself off his bar stool and backing towards the door. “I’ll get you for this!”
“We serve great food here!” Harley snarled. “If you don’t like it, you can go to McDonald’s and get some ‘impossible meat’ from a factory in Kuwait! See if I care!”
The trucker stalked out of the diner, the ringing bell on the door announcing that the joint was empty once more.
“Hey, what’s going on?” Dick, the fry cook and owner, called from the kitchen.
“Nothin’, Dickie. Guy just spilled his coffee,” Harley said, fixing her eyes on the shut door, just waiting for the guy to come stomping back with a baseball bat or something else.
She wished he would. She’d take the bar stool his fat ass had warmed up and shove it right down his throat, since he didn’t know a quality meal anyway…
Dick pushed the swinging doors to the kitchen open and walked out into the counter area. “I have good ears, Harley, but I can’t hear everything. Especially if someone’s whispering.”
Harley put the coffee pot back on the warmer and gave Dick a smile. He was about the only guy she knew, other than Batman, who treated her as something other than a piece of meat. “He mighta mentioned something about how I could get a really good tip out of him.”
“And that’s when you poured the coffee on him?”
“Guess I get triggered when a guy says ‘just the tip.’”
Harley bent down and picked up an old dishrag to wipe down the counter. She didn’t like cleaning and Dick wasn’t the usual tinpot dictator about having time to clean and time to lean, but it broke some of the tension when she did.
She knew the diner wasn’t doing well. It didn’t help for her to be driving away customers.
Dick wiped his greasy hands on his stained white apron. “Well, thanks for just staining his sleeve. I appreciate you not giving that jerk what he deserved.”
“You do?” Harley asked, her heart beating faster.
“Yeah. I started this diner because I realized a lot of people like you—people who took a wrong turn in life—didn’t have anywhere they could go to work a straight job. Everyone told me it was only a matter of time until the whole thing blew up in my face. But you’re proving me right. All you needed was a chance.”
“So you’re thanking me?” Harley gasped, agog.
“Uh-huh. I really appreciate it.”
“And you’re… grateful?”
Dick chuckled. “That’s what I’ve been trying to say, yeah.”
Harley cooed lusciously. “I’ve been waiting to get shown some gratitude for so long!”
