Agent Carter: Tailpipe
🕑 Added 2022-05-05 02:00:03 +0000 UTCFinally, Angie thought as the cab skidded to a stop in front of her. It’d taken forever for her to hail a cab. And she’d thought she looked so cute.
She climbed in and was struck by the… prettiness of the driver. Androgynous more than handsome, save for a large, broken nose and a shaggy beard, but that couldn’t disguise the limpid, hazel eyes that Angie found so aesthetic, or the strong, sleek features that would be oh-so-appealing with a bath to take care of that layer of sweat. Or even without it. Sometimes Angie liked a man with a bit of musk.
“Where to, miss?” the hack asked in a gruff Brooklyn accent. It reminded her of Peggy, not that Peggy was anything less than eloquent at all times, but this guy had the same directness. That face, too—could’ve been Peggy’s brother. No wonder his appearance had struck Angie… even intrigued her.
She quickly gave him the address and ducked her head, minding her own business. Her friendship with Peggy was confused enough without her seeing English in some taxi driver.
But then, how much simpler would it be if Peggy were a guy… even if no guy would look quite as good as Peggy did being Peggy, she was the height of femininity, all curves and culture? And Mr. Peggy Carter would definitely never let Angie do what she wanted to do to Miss Peggy Carter, even if they both had the proper orifice.
But darn would it be simple, just letting onto the guy how she felt about ‘him’. Angie felt like she’d spent her whole life preparing for how to do that and none at all for what to do about the feelings Peggy gave her.
Then she noticed the hack’s eyes in the rear-view mirror, examining her, clearly turning her over in her mind as deftly as she’d been mentally handling him. And those hazel eyes didn’t at all look like they were comparing Angie to some guy. They made her feel all-woman.
And Angie suddenly felt there must be something about her that this cabbie could smell. In some way she had to be advertising herself like a cocktail waitress and that embarrassed even her. But it didn’t stop her from briefly entertaining the idea.
This guy was a total stranger, yet he’d caught her fancy—maybe that was just what she needed, someone she had never seen before and would never see again, who she could have some fun with. Use to put some distance between her and the daily maelstrom of feelings things about Peggy.
He couldn’t gaze into her eyes all the time, though. When he broke the connection to watch traffic, Angie forced herself not to glance at the cab license that was fastened to the sun visor, his name and picture on it. She didn’t want to know his name or for him to know hers. Angie wanted this to be purely anonymous.
She also wanted, needed him to make the first move. She was willing to provoke him, signal her interest, do all she could to let him know that his advance would be well-received—but he needed to be the man. She felt like being the woman, not the unnatural… what she was with Peggy.
Everything that wasn’t the simple friend she was supposed to be.
And that was why, as the cab drew closer and closer to her apartment, she could not let him get away without making it clear to him what she wanted. And if he needed her to be more brazen than that, to hell with him. It wasn’t like he was what she really wanted. Angie would not go further than halfway.
Finally the cab pulled up in front of her building. The motor shut off and began to hiss itself cool. They still hadn’t spoken to each other, but the looks they had given and received felt like an exhausting bout of foreplay. Angie was itching to move on to more. She stared at her driver in the mirror, not moving a muscle to get out. He turned his head and looked at her over his shoulder.
“This the place?” he asked, eyes drinking in her mouth, then her pert breasts that rose and fell excitedly under her thin blouse.
Angie said nothing, just stared at him, her eyes saying kiss me, kiss me, don’t you see you can kiss me?
“Angie, isn’t this your stop?”
At the sound of her name, Angie startled. She’d been so fixated on not telling it to the hack that it came as a shock to suddenly hear it. “How’d you know my name?”
“We’ve lived together half a year now, darling, shouldn’t I know it by now?”
Now Angie got it, and it hit her so hard that it made her blood boil. She leaned forward and tore the fake beard from Peggy’s face, taking some of the false nose with it.
“Oww!” Peggy cried. “You’re supposed to use hot water for that…”
“You… you…” Angie fumed. She told herself that Ms. Congeniality there was never seen without her face on, so of course she didn’t recognize her with no blush, no mascara, that ridiculous beard… but an insidious voice said that she hadn’t wanted to recognize her, that she’d wanted a man who reminded her of Peggy but wasn’t Peggy.
“Relax, I’m not a cross-dresser,” Peggy assured her, finishing the removal of the uncouth nose. “It’s for an assignment. I was setting up a routine so I don’t look out of place at a coming event, then I saw you hailing a cab and I couldn’t resist.”
“Then what was with those looks you were giving me?” Angie demanded.
“What looks?”
“The looks!” Angie insisted.
“I looked at you no differently than I always look at you,” Peggy maintained.
“You were giving me the look. A guy look.”
Peggy’s nose twitched with sudden realization. “Is that why—is that why you weren’t getting out of the cab? Because you thought…”
Angie tried hard to keep her voice from edging into shrillness. “Oh no! I didn’t think that at all! You were the one giving me looks…”
“Ang, please, I would never make a woman uncomfortable by play-acting some sort of lout, even as a jest. And anyway, you’re being silly. I know you, you’d never allow yourself to be picked up by some strange man—“
“I would when he’s you!” Angie argued, kicking Peggy’s seat.
Peggy rocked forward with the petty blow, but otherwise was shocked motionless. “You…” She broke out in a giggle. “Oh, Angie, I’ve counseled you through many a heartbreak, but I never thought you’d nurse a crush on me with some ruddy beard. I am sorry. Let’s go inside and have an egg cream, hmm?”
Angie set her jaw in a grimace. “You know what I mean, English. Don’t pretend you don’t. You’ve always known I thought you were the tops, but fine, now that the cork’s out, let’s finish the bottle. Our little mutual admiration society? You having fun knowing I think you look like the cat’s pajamas and me loving that you appreciate me so much? That isn’t all there is to it, now is there? When I see you swanning around in your thin little nightie, or dressing up all hoity-toity for some soiree and you need my help with your perfect hair, or you’re fresh from the shower and you don’t see nothing wrong with giving me the time of day while you’re wearing nothing but a towel…”
“Angie…” Peggy tried to interrupt her, but Angie wouldn’t be interrupted.
“I don’t just wanna look like you and I don’t just wanna walk around on your elbow, knowing we’re the two hottest kittens this town has ever seen. I want you. I want to be yours. And when I hear some masher saying you’ve got a nice fat caboose, I don’t just wanna flatten him for talking nonsense, I wanna give all that honey ham a smack just as bad as he does. I don’t ever wanna disrespect you like those mother’s sons do, but good golly, have you got tits and ass and legs for days. I’ve noticed and I’ve thought about it and I’ve wanted to do things with you that would get me barred from a nudist colony. And I’ve done those things before; I know how good they are. You’d love it as much as I do, that’s what kills me. Only another woman can know where every little pleasure is and make love that doesn’t leave them behind. But I know what you’re thinking. Making love to another female, and letting her love you, isn’t something nice girls do. So if you hate me, hate me, fine, but at least I said it, because it’s just hell thinking something all the time and never letting it out.”
Angie took in a deep breath when she finished and Peggy let out a held exhale, as stricken as Angie had been by the long speech. Then, while Angie sat there, Peggy keyed the ignition again. The engine roared back to life, shattering the spell of Angie’s soulful words.
“Going to turn me into the cops for crimes against nature?” Angie asked bitterly.
“Don’t be silly!” Peggy chided her with a snap, and breathlessness, to her words. “I’m driving us someplace where we can be alone.”
“Huh?”
“You tell me I’ve misjudged you, that I haven’t noticed you. Well, there’s plenty you don’t know about me, Ang. And since I doubt the other girls would be so dismissive if we retired to the same room at 7 PM and started banging the headboard, I think we should go someplace quiet to get this out of your system. I can’t very well have you professing your love to me out of the blue in the middle of Sunday brunch, can I?”
Realizing what Peggy meant, Angie shone a wide grin right at the rear-view mirror. “I’ve got an awful lot to get out of my system, English. You’ve been sashaying those wide hips around for a long time.”
“It’s been a long time since they’ve gotten any appreciation. If I can handle waiting until New York traffic has had its way with us, so can you.”
Angie bit the inside of her cheek. She’d been lucky enough to get into this cab with Peggy, lucky enough to have her confession be matched with that confession of Peggy’s. And she was lucky enough to have in her purse the perfect thing to show Peggy all the appreciation she could handle. Traffic wouldn’t be an issue. Some Greek god of aspiring actresses and twilight worlders was smiling on her tonight.
