"The mere suggestion that Evelyne would be the one to unveil its secrets felt like more than a betrayal. It was an affront to the very essence of what the original considered it meant to be a Hartford." It feels that Evelyn might be the bastard or step chiild and Scarlett the true first child and yet the first born wasn't trusted with the ring's secrets that every Hartford head obtained.

A very well written if sad chapter. The imagery of Evelyne alone in the dark hurt physically and emotionally reaching out is very powerful. It’s hard not to feel for Evelyne the way she gets desperate to reach out when Scarlett lashes out for a nebulous reason. I don’t think it’s a stretch to say she feels like she’s been given a second chance with her sister. Something that she had clearly from the early dialogue given up on completely. It must be traumatic to think your only family might to slip back into loathing you for incomprehensible reasons and maybe part of it’s your fault for not trying hard enough. It’s an important realization that with a blank past Scarlett will never be able to reconcile with Evelyne. The dichotomy between self loathing and pride in what Amy has accomplished in her new life as Scarlett has always been there to a degree but now seems to have become greater. Now that Scarlett has dealt with the fallout of self inflicted wounds and become someone that she and others in her life can be proud of her lack of memories isn’t a topic that she can brush aside without creating more damage. Evelyne is an intelligent person she probably has picked up more than she lets on. Scarlett stopping to show a moment of vulnerability and self awareness that her behavior is unacceptable is a step in itself though not to the point where there’s a clear path forward. She’s reached out in a way by admitting they were never close but how Evelyne takes that is hard to guess it’s not at face value kind though it does offer an opening albeit in a selfish way by not going further. Though the fact she feels the same kind of intense emotion seeing Evelyne injured is a bright spot towards reconciliation if she can find a way to start dealing with her past. Though Evelyne being the best person to help her and the only one who really had a clue what she’s going through complicates things.

This is where I discontinued my membership. The motivations of the main character are too inconsistent - I suspect you're responding to feedback that "she isn't villainous enough", but the main character is aware of a personally existential threat-race that her enemies are close to winning, is aware that she has no reason for enmity with her sister, has spent dozens of chapters improving rapport with her sister, has spent hundreds of chapters honing fire mastery skills, has learned from her fire master that there is no shortcut other than a family member telling her how to use the ring, and...immediately and furiously declines an offer for help from her sister to help access the ring, because she's having "feelings". The contrast between cold rationality and absolute irrationality seems to serve no purpose other than to muddle how much character development has occurred, negate the significance of past mini-arcs, and slow down the plot even further. I don't think there is enough plot indication that the ring is important to plot development, but the MC has been (almost the only plot of most chapters) repeatedly scrounging ways to bolster their personal strengths, and bonding with sister to be functionally better - why this sudden shift to self-destructive sentimentality? It's not justified in text even with the paragraphs of "Scarlet hadn't previously ..." - it feels deeply inauthentic within-universe. If this is just a setup for the next chapter to be introspection and then Scarlett coming around to ask Evelyn for help, that isn't a "personal growth mini-arc", since Scarlett had already gotten to the point many, many chapters ago of being able to subdue her irrational emotions toward Evelyn in favor of clear self-interest. It's just padding so the Patreon can be milked longer, and it breaks the immersion of the story for the characters to be so inconsistent.

Poor Evelyne

pelya

Evelyne's point of view would be great. Scarlett is a better mage already, especially with all her items.

Lya

Both OG and current Scarlett have such complicated painful pasts... This chapter got me in the feels, I can't wait to read more.

Pandalf
