MinE

Didn't they take the mana core out of a society mage?

Orion Fritz

It's the difference between seeing someone without a arm, and seeing someone have their arm taken off. Alice is saying she has never seen someone lose their core, seen someone have their core taken out.

MinE

Interesting theory, it’s likely true since everything we’ve seen the system do can be explained as optimizing or improving a preexisting phenomenon to make it more beneficial to humans: Mana baptisms are an obvious example,Monsters seem to have increased stats despite their single minded nature, and class seeds mainly process class mana which humans produce naturally.

Gio

Achievments and titles are not a part of the system, but mana itself. The system just describes them, if they were a part of the system, the system would never have given Alice the ability to see system mana.

BeepBoop

"she had never once seen a Mage actually lose their Mage core" was there a retcon regarding how they found Samantha?

Rain

Very cool!

mahu

Well she was in panic for some time already with all that's happening there and could be same issue as you searching for key you holding in your hand.

mahu

Well its not healing but amputation, and when you regrow magical core, seed will still be malformed.

Pheonixarcher

I’m concerned that Alice isn’t in for a pleasant time with that mana coming at her

Pheonixarcher

I wonder if Alice’s internal system is trying to give her a title for saving a life from a malformed magic seed without system help

Eternaly_Lost

The order that Alice did things in here feel rather off. Even if Alice doesn't think to try it first, Ethan should point out that removing the cores to give her perk cooldown time to pass should be something they do first. It would make more sense if the issue with the Core happens first, which drains Ethan enough that they can't repeat it a second time, forcing Alice to experiment on another way. Right now she just jumps into playing around with a core, when she had no idea that removing a core like has happened dozens of times around her without issue, would have issues.

Arkeus

My point is, in fact, that the already successful healing was with asking to destroy the magical core first.

I don't know, I see this as less of Alice experimenting and more about being hyper-focused on a single solution that she did not even process simpler ones. We see this all the time in the world. She was under a ton of pressure and stress that she is in no way prepared for, and she already had a successful "healing" with her Broken Seed perk. I find it natural that her first thought was to replicate that process, and not spend time trying to think of alternatives.

Glass Glade

For the flashback I'd cut it off at "Finally, the rainbow and pure mana surrounding Tavi started to disappear." Because the flashback is done in italics, that indicates personal character thoughts (of Alice). It feels awkward for Alice to refer to herself in the third person in her own thoughts with "Alice Grinned". The sentence "Despite her worst fears, Tavi’s mana baptism had been successful" is also superfluous because before the flashback you already established it was the first successful mana baptism.

This chapter isn't registered as a 'budding scientist' chapter, you can only see it when looking at your recent publications, not when looking at 'budding scientist' chapters

This has absolutely nothing to do with what I said though? I completely agree the system doesn't exist, but she has seen a specific method working for this exact problem before, and has seen that method working dozen of times without issues. Inventing a new method from nowhere while the established method has been for hundred of years "do this" come out of leftfield and seems more akeen to "let's go torture is fun".

Sdff

The system existed before. And does not exist now. I do not know how to explain their issues besides that, but the second body showed that removal of the core is not a stable process without the system. Her first attempt at dissolving the core was theoretically preferable since the core will otherwise try to grow back. The issue as we saw though is that the stored energy tries to release if the system, or her ability, isn't there. The second person had unregulated mana flows once their core was removed, and we don't know if the cores regeneration can be prevented.

Stephen Pearson

FYI, it looks like you dropped chapter 125 of this fiction to Markets and Multiverses on Royalroad.

Arkeus

This is really frustrating because the exact same thing happened to her friend before and there was an exact procedure that worked for saving her life - now, we see the system helped during that procedure, but Alice already have experience in what to do in that exact scenario, so just... doing something else completely felt like her trying to experiment rather than save lives.

MinE

Great chapter, I'm guessing the earlier level up error during the mana deprivation experiments was caused by the isolation of the mana from the outside mana rather than lack of system mana. I hope so b/c she definitely needs more levels to fix the system. P.S You forgot the Budding Scientist tag.
