Fucking Shracc

what you are forgetting is that physics isn't the same in every universe, the market did have guides for adapting tech for other universes. Ideas should still hold up but their implementation might be impossible without abilities to alter laws.

Benjamin Smith

Isn't wood really rare in this setting, though? They probably don't have enough to use for that sort of thing.

If only they played aoe... they would know to use catapults to tunnel their city into a large forest for the ultimate defense :D

Christoffer Gustafsson

Ballista, yes, thank you. I was thinking about that word for like 30sec. My hundreds of hours in AoE2 did not help me this time. But hopefully our sweet protagonists will realise that basic engineering will help immensely in the future. And hopefully they will be able to access said knowledge without getting killed by a random lich or plant thing when they return to the market.

I think you’re thinking of a scorpion/ballista. Arablest is sorta like the anti-material rifle of crossbows, ballista is the siege version. Yeah, noticed that too. Seems like engineering/tech would be pretty op early in a reincarnator’s career, with martial combat being mid game and magic not really coming into its own until you’ve built up a lot of stats. Engineering and technical knowledge should be available in the market too, since this is a pretty obvious way to make points. A scorpion could have cleaned up at this battle. A scorpion cart with a magazine feed and a bicycle style peddle system for rapid cranking could have turned the battle easily even if local tech couldn’t handle the chains (unlikely) and you had to settle for a belt drive. Building a prototype and introducing such a weapon system to the cave society could turn the entire conflict, not just this one battle. If I somehow stumble into the market my first priority is going to be devouring any technical manuals I can find to beef out my real world knowledge. I would bet there are even anarchist cookbook style ‘best method’ manuals available as items. Second is getting some crafting skills and more importantly some magical shaping skills to bridge the gaps in local capabilities when bootstrapping tech. Should be able to balloon my stats after a world or two :D

Christoffer Gustafsson

I just realised the lack of siege weaponry. Like... those large crossbow things, arbalests? Or even just heavy crossbows. They once where a advanced civilization. But I guess they are just overly reliant on magic to do the heavy lifting instead of proper warforged tools.

Nathan Sto

Ah, politics, gotcha. TBH, even at 7th circle, he's got roughly 100x the essence of a normal witch, so I guess it's extreme enough already. Originally, I thought that the goof was that the 7th circle spell was supposed to be an 8th circle spell.

The 'I hear' was meant to imply it's more rumor and hearsay than fact, but if that's confusing, maybe I'll reword it a bit in chapter 84. Overseer was intentionally spreading rumors that he could cast eighth circle spells, but these days, eighth circle casters are... pretty hard to find. Too many symbols XD.

Stephen Pearson

Thanks for the chapter! :-)

Nathan Sto

Note: the 8th circle spell was mentioned in chapter 84, when her teacher is talking about how circles are constructed: "Still, fifth circle spells are a common dividing line for the better spellcasters in the city, and I hear the overseer can cast eighth circle spells. He’s an absolute monster, and has enough mana to make a man die of jealousy" It's said in such a manner that it might just be inaccurate, but this is someone who Ella hired to teach Miria, so he should be pretty knowledgeable.

Nathan Sto

At an earlier point in the story, it was mentioned that the overseer was able to cast 1 8th circle spell. It was also mentioned that the cost for each circle rose by 4 times the cost of the previous circle. Therefore; The 8th rank spell costs 87,381 symbols (1 + 4 + 16 + 64 + 256 + 1,024 + 4,096 + 16,384 + 65,536) The 7th rank spell costs 21,845 symbols (1 + 4 + 16 + 64 + 256 + 1,024 + 4,096 + 16,384) The Overseer should have been able to cast 3 more 7th rank spells before he was done, winning this battle nearly single-handedly.

Daniel Allen (Brynath)

Sheesh nothing like seeing a pyrrhic victory from the losing side.
