MinE

Ps They could be carriers because the thought worms only like eating intelligent minds, but that seems a weird standard given those rock heads are still barely sapient so it would be weirdly picky.

Treviisolion

Welp, the CR of this upcoming encounter seems to have increased. Hopefully someone other than Miria can deal with these worms or else this town’s doomed

MinE

Just realized a minor issue if the oruthyki are immune because of their magical resistance, Miria should’ve been completely immune due to having higher willpower and the same if not better magical resistance thanks to her held ability.

Arkeus

I don't think Salia needs alteration the way Miria does to modify her runes. Basically Miria has extreme alteration talent so she can do dumb stuff with it, but Salia should be able to do dumb stuff with her absorption, probably even evolve the rune system.

MinE

I was worried she would have brain damage from this, so thankfully she has grade 7 willpower if I recall correctly. She should be fine because that's the same as Miria has currently. Unfortunately that means she basically screwed if her 8th rune doesn't make her immune to their attacks or she finds out how to alter her rune abilities with alteration into something useful against mental attacks. P.S Miria playing the nearly overpowered character with a misplaced dump stat and Salia playing the crippled character who should be nigh invincible; if this happens again on the third world, I think its fate.

MinE

At least that confirms the worms are alteration and/or manifestation based, so they aren't from the other world.

We haven't gotten to ability upgrades yet, but they're very interesting. They can take an ability in very different directions, based on how you use something and how much potential an ability has. We'll get to that at some point, but I do really like ability evolutions. Keyword abilities become exponentially more exciting the more you upgrade them! :D Sallia has 7 runes. This is the only reason she lived through this chapter. She formed a sixth rune based on muscle manipulation, to combo with her other physical stuff, and got punished hard for it this chapter, because she got overconfident in the mental boost from 7 runes. Although, this does lead her back towards the realization that her magic system is missing some things, and It'll probably send her a little bit back towards her originally intended character concept/magic system. Which is very fun :D. This world she went into shadow healing/stealth/muscles. Which is logical for adventuring, but not very fun :(.

I was THINKING of the false hydra when I created the thought worms. They are distinctly different, since, uhh... a proper false hydra should not be kicking around in a random Tier 4 world at full power XD. I figure they're more fitting for a Tier 6 world, give or take a bit. Though, admittedly, a big enough outlier can absolutely outgrow the world they live in, it's just exponentially harder. Exhibit A: Mister Kraken from the islands. (I intend to have Miria explicitly point this out sometime in the future, possibly after the next return to the Market?). And the Orukthyri here are a bit of a problem. Them surviving though worms is... pretty natural, given their magic resistance, but very inconvenient for Miria. RIP

Stephen Pearson

Thanks for the chapter! :-)

MinE

Triple yikes since these things are apparently based on the False Hydra which depending on the version can grow indefinitely with food; there is going to be the thought worm equivalent of the final boss from their previous world knowing their luck.

MinE

I think she either has 5 or 6; I think both of them decided to wait till they had a good idea for an ability. In hindsight delaying rune growth to get a better idea of optimal rune abilities is kinda impractical especially if Miria manages to learn how to alter rune abilities themselves rather than their effects and either teaches Salia how to do it or does it for her. P.s I wonder if Salia can use her alteration essence to weaken her magical resistance for Miria to use her shaping on her?

Arkeus

Yike seems the orukthyri completely survived this... And probably are carriers of the thought worms. Double yikes.

Arkeus

Imo Salia likely is doing something dumb re:her absorption essence when it comes to dealing with mental attacks. I also thought she already had eight runes, but who knows.

MinE

Maybe, she already can change the effects of the ability, so changing the ability itself seems more of a technique and experience issue than anything else.

Brandon Cleveland

I bet that at the end of this life she is going to be given the option to upgrade her keyword ability so that she can use alteration essence to change her Rune effects giving her greater flexibility.

MinE

Disappointing achievement gain aside, wow thought worms are stupidly op if you don’t have a way of dealing with mental attacks. Miria learned how to alter her rune abilities which is fun and opens a lot of potential combo moves. Unfortunately Salia is going to be pretty much helpless until she gets her 7th and 8th rune. Miria has experience with mental attacks, so she should be able to hard counter these things once she gets her 7th rune, then she can get some old fashion revenge and hunt down whatever abomination created/birthed those things.

MinE

Perfect timing again.
