I subsumed myself into the cultural zeitgeist of a magical world and all I got was this stupid tee shirt and a single level in my primary class. Seems a bit underwhelming even with the bump in difficulty after 75. I guess she hasn’t really digested the info or firmed up any conclusions yet, but she certainly explored.

CaylaCat

okay but like, did half the Explorer of Magic experience go to the seed that got deleted resulting in one level rather than two?

CaylaCat

dimensional manna isn't necessarily effected by this. all we know is that system achievements and classes are shaped by perception

MindWright

I actually considered that, but it would also mean nearly everything we've learned about this world is wrong or based on faulty assumptions. Instead of being Isekaied from our Earth or an Earth-like alternate Alice would either have been traded between two simulated realities, or what she believes she knows about her origins is simply wrong.

Treviisolion

It is possible that the ASCII is a hint as to the origin of the system. There are a number of hints that humans are not originally from this world. The fact that some of the plants and all the non-magical animals seem to be similar to their Earth counterparts, while all the monsters are fantastical in some way, plus the fact that humans react so insanely poorly to mana and were according to the scant records remaining, bodied hard by the monsters suggests strongly that humans did not evolve on this planet, but rather appeared out of nowhere along with a bunch of their plants and livestock and other animals. Those plants and animals being Earth-like suggests they are from Earth (or at least some version of Earth) as the chance of some random planet unassociated with Earth evolving the same subset of plants and animals is next to nil. Finally, there are a number of weird points about this society’s knowledge. The knowledge about biology could have been developed as organic tendrils made experimenting orders of magnitude easier, but microscopes don’t seem to be a thing, and the differences between bacteria, viruses, and other disease-causing pathogens is not easily determined without access to a microscope. Electromagnetic seeds are another such oddity. Electricity and magnetism are not obviously connected, and the electromagnetic seed seems to prevent the actual connection. It almost seems like a bunch of people who had knowledge of the more fundamental rules of our world got lost in this world, and their children’s perceptions of the rules learned from Earth founded the basis of the perceptions that created the base seeds and classes. If so, the ASCII could be a clue that the creator of the system spoke English, or perhaps the collective desire of humanity for some divine ex machina create a literal ex machina in the form of a computerized system with error messages in ascii binary because that is what they thought would happen based on the fiction from our world. Of course if that’s true then there should be some remnant of Earth’s languages somewhere on this planet, so if it turns out that’s not the case then this theory is probably wrong.

Diego Rossi

The rewrite was well done, and a very important set up for this chapter. After reading it, it was clear to me that something had happened to the spies, with the "Farmer" and "Hunter" mana taking over. It almost happening to Alice is very important, I feel. You aren't the first writer that redo one or more chapters. It happens. Thanks for your work.

Diego Rossi

Actual chapter starts here: is one paragraph earlier than the actual start of the chapter.

Derek Walker

The only reason I am skeptical is because at least for Seeker of Truth, almost no one has any idea or conception of what the hell Alice is doing/has done/will do /etc. so I think in this case rarity may be tied to objective considerations. But again that’s speculation

Abborre

Considering the link to other peoples minds and perceptions it could be that rarity is related to how many the achievement is connected to. Like if the army witnessing Alice had been bigger she would have got a higher rarity one... Maybe?

MinE

I think levels are the main bit, but other people probably influence the other benefits of the achievement. Maybe tier 2 classes get an exp boost if people think about you doing something related to the class?

ShadeByTheSea

I feel that was achievement worthy :/ thoughts? it's fine if it's not though.

MinE

That suggest either the perk is reliant on outside assistance from the system or those that are suffering picked up the perk recently.

ShadeByTheSea

I think 1 level is fine if she also gets an achievement.

MinE

Proabably. P.s I wonder how many upgrades it’s possible to get to that b/c a Seeker of Truth (XX) would be getting ridiculous.

Derek Walker

So something like Seeker of Truth (V) still a rarity 10 but with better rewards ?

MinE

I think rarity 10 is kinda an infinite thing. I mean the boost between rarity 10s likely vary more than the difference between rarity 1 and 9.

William Waggoner

In regards to using the “dimensional” version vs a “space” version. Space encompasses a lot but to a more relatively “primitive” scientific society the “Dimensional” version would be seen as a much narrower field of information wouldn’t you think? I mean we know that the whole “dimensional” aspect of it would require the majority of what would be contained in the “space” aspect. Including gravity and time. The society that Alice is in may have no idea what it could possibly require and going the “dimensional” route would seem simpler in comparison to something so vast as “space”.

Derek Walker

I wonder if she will get an achievement for this. Is 10 the maximum of rarity because it seems like seeker of truth should upgrade from this? And I wonder if this counts as a successful experiment since she ultimately learned why forming class seeds like this would fail

Drake_Azathoth

Other people are like 'That sounds really dangerous' and the System nods and approves. Kek, that makes Survivor kind of an interesting class to level, as you can do it by doing 'stupid' things.

MindWright

Otherwise, good call on the rewrites and good chapter.

MindWright

I dislike the binary easter egg. For me, it breaks verisimilitude because I immediately recognize ASCII encoding and for a layer of this system to be using that encoding method seems out of place. Reading it is annoyingly slow, or requires software assistance, which isn't readily available from my phone. Why isn't the system using its inherent translating ability? If a core violation is so low level it cannot access that feature, then the semiotic nature of the message should reveal something about its origins. Either the original language of its creators or some internal symbolic encoding method.

Eternaly_Lost

This chapter seems to imply that all immortals are not immortals because they reached a high enough level, but because enough people think that they are like an immortal in some area. Which causes them to gain the immortal achievement. I could see how people could be confused that being an immortal came with your level, if you need to be powerful enough that enough people think you should be an immortal, even if they think such subconsciously. It doubtful that someone of a low level could make enough people think such.

Midnight Harbinger

The Error code (Faulty magic seed detected. Magic seed has been assessed to override free will of a human being. Error! Magic seed is a Class! Fixing errors... success!)

Bryan D

Or the explode-if-caught is a perk of their spy-boss. Similar to forcing a slave to work- ‘No Lost Secrets’ type perk.

Enrico Snipes

With the reworked chapters, it made me think that perhaps the spies had some perk that disguised their class by using raw class mana, but due to the recent bugs in the system, this raw mana overpowered their personality, forcing them to act as their disguise class. Like Boris trying to farm.

Adleiavde

You added it a paragraph too early in your text if that helps.

Mike G.

Or just rot13 - nothing wrong with the classics :)

rhekke

Agree with the above 100% Rough drafts exist for a reason.

Abborre

It might make the Perks from a dimensional magic Class more... offensive.

MikeL

Would that be a rarity 10 achievement.

MinE

I think it’s more because they have no idea what they’re doing. I mean they don’t even have a concept of spacetime and they’re essentially ripping holes into other dimensions. The bad pr probably makes it worse, but I doubt the people before the original dimensional disaster thought it was dangerous at least not to the degree that would cause it. P.s I have no idea why they decided to use dimensional mana instead of space mana.

RuRo

Pro tip for lazy people, the binary error code in this chapter is "Faulty magic seed detected. Magic seed has been assessed to override free will of a human being. Error! Magic seed is a Class! Fixing errors... success!". Pro tip for the author: use base64 or hex to encode Easter egg messages. Binary is way too long. 😁

acaswell

Fair point. Fixed!

puppy0cam

sometimes you fuck something up. the important part is that you didn't let it sit and stew generating even further problems the longer you left it.

Glass Glade

Hmm. Is dimensional magic more dangerous because people perceive it as dangerous?

MikeL

You should add where chapter 117 starts. I am going to reread the last chapters instead of the notes and couldn’t tell by skimming where it starts. Thanks

puppy0cam

one of these days the system is either going to get sick of her shit and eliminate her, or it is going to give her an official status as "system bug tester"

Pro tips for people who don't know, you can translate the binary code to text easily with an online translator

acaswell

Oh yeah, I meant to point out Survivor levels XD. Interestingly enough, Survivor doesn't care about the survival of the mind, so long as the physical body remains intact. Alice, however, has gained Survivor levels at rather... unusual intervals. I believe with this chapter people can figure out why Alice got Survivor levels at seemingly random times in the past, like, 60 chapters or something. XD I might mention it next chapter anyway. It's a fun little bit of worldbuilding :D

Anthony Goh

I think from level 74 to 75 is reasonable, due to the level penalty, but I am thinking for survivor to increase from level 54 to 55 seems a bit low, even though its safe as her personality nearly got wiped out.

acaswell

Maybe? Idk. I feel like it's really not ideal that the situation came to this in the first place, but every time I think about chapter 115 and 116 I just feel really unhappy with them. They felt like they impacted the quality of the story, and I felt stressed out and frustrated whenever I thought about them. I was kind of out of it last week and the week before last when I was writing chapters, and I wanted to stamp on the issues from those two weeks before they created a larger flaw in the story that I had a harder time fixing. This way is painful, since I hate editing chapters that are already available for reading, but I think it's the best path forward, even if it's far from ideal. As for 1 level seeming low, remember that she also hit another multiple of 25, so another levelling speed penalty is now in effect starting from the transition between Level 75 and 76. Every one of those levelling penalties is meant to be noticeable and to hurt, especially this one, since it's the biggest hurdle between most people and Immortality.

MinE

P.S Your being to hard on yourself.

MinE

I would complain that 1 level seems little, but honestly Alice is lucky the system didn't have to remove her class.
