Quietly awaiting the die roll results.

Thanks for the chapter! :-)

There are no deus ex machinas in this story: Miria and co. must outwit or outfight the enemies they encounter if they wish to live. If there is no route to them winning, they die. As for the defensive power of the combat team... the city itself has a second set of defenders that would get to work if the Orukthyri broke through this area. But a bunch of people in the 'outlying caverns' of the area could potentially die before the city stabilized the situation. The city itself was nowhere near at risk from this attack, but several dozen civilians might die if the problem isn't dealt with here.

MinE

The fact that Orukthyri can be casters and are more intelligent than initially believed makes me hope Miria gets an impressive ability for this either held or keyword.

Adleiavde

To be fair, the 2 caster-guards supposed to protect them have yet to act, and i doubt all of the high end combat power of the defense team is focused only on the 2 Orukthyri killing the gaurds and ignoring the 2 fighting the kids. If their situational awareness were that bad, the city would have been destroyed long ago.

Arkeus

Plot wise given their small numbers of lives it would introduce some really cool tension if they were all to die before getting the keywords and achievements and knowledge they need. Still, I suspect the teachers have had time to kill the caster by now, and I think both Salia and Miria are going to have a breakthrough in their magical system use.

Arkeus

Yeah it's unfortunate that Salia's runes are not directly capable of hurting them, as currently they are more for opposing them in their own physicality. The warriors also seem like they are significantly weaker than normal orukthyri, which makes sense as a warrior engineered race on a t4-5 world is, huh, going to be quite potent.

Treviisolion

True, that would be rather anticlimatic

MinE

Probably not given this is a two parter and leaving us on a cliffhanger just to kill them off on a Chapter named Orukthyri (2) is anticlimactic.

Treviisolion

I genuinely can’t tell if their teachers are going ex machina their way into saving the group, or if the students are all going to die. From a narrative perspective, option one would make more sense in most stories as most authors don’t cut off their character’s plans short, but the second option would highlight the very major tradeoff of the Miria strategy they came up with after their last life, that without sufficient caution or luck seeking danger may just get you killed before you do enough awesome stuff to pay for the life. From an in-world perspective, these Orukthyri are extremely tough and seem to have quite a bit left in the tank while Miria and Sallia seem to be on their last legs, everyone is already occupied dealing with either the caster, or the ones dealing with the soldiers, so them becoming casualties wouldn’t be unusual. On the other hand if the town could go down so easily I wouldn’t expect it to exist, so either Lauren or Ella are able to save the girls or some other caster/shaper deus ex machinas them to safety. I am looking forward to the next chapter.

MinE

Grade 12 physical stats or an ability that matches that, Orukthyri are terrifying. Are their stats normal or are they stronger due to being variants. P.S Absorption essence seems to bypass their immunity looks like Miria is going to be able to beat them pretty easily when she gets her full 7 runes. Its unfortunate Salia's rune abilities focus more on boosting herself than harming her opponent or she would hard counter their entire race.
