Margaret Lloyd

Eh Bookworm and Capable Enchanter seem almost unavoidable for anyone with the right class, and Malnourished is explicitly an achievement. I really think most people have lots more than Alice does

Adleiavde

First, I doubt there's achievements for just about anything. And even if there were achievements for more common things, their gains woud be negligible. The system rewards hard work (and thinking out of the box) so common achivements would be really low tiers with really few rewards. With the pace she's going at, wasting time to gain an achievement giving a bonus 2-3% for one or two stats is useless if not counterproductive. On top of that, the church of the system categorize pretty much every well-know achievements (that's how she found about the bookworm achievement if I remember well) so she'd have probavly already acquired them if she required them and it's within her means. Ethan might know some achievements usefull to her, but I doubt they are easy to get, so she might need to get stronger first.

IDFree

It could also work by throwing large amounts of math mana at the problem and forming the so called dreaded "Large Language Models". But that would be a silly way of doing things, right? 😜

MinE

Well her achievement wasn't first otherworlder, so their could be one before her. I'm pretty sure she's the only human from earth that's going to appear a live due to the ridiculously low odds of a human being summoned successfully from earth and surviving the mana baptism. Going to 0 to anything could cause a mana baptism easily.

MinE

Either experiment on herself or on monsters probably. I think monsters have seeds in their cores or at least an equivalent.

MinE

I think achievements would be more important, but it would be annoying if part of their sentencing guidelines involved the level of criminal classes. Removing the classes isn't the issue its the loss of evidence due to not being able to check their level. P.S Criminal classes probably have perks that are useful enough to want to keep.

BigBro Bluesman

If you hear a scientist maniacally laughing its normally vary good..for them at least.

puppy0cam

@Drake Morgan that's not really a problem for someone who wants to evade the law, they'd kinda practically line up in order to get their class removed.

D

Woudnt understanding / mind mana be more a means for interfacing like key or voice input for pc?

Margaret Lloyd

Maybe for new discoveries, but those weren't the ones I had in mind. There must be whole bunches of achievements that normal people ge that Alice has missed. Capable Enchanter for example seems to suggest a lot of classes should have something for "you're a real X now". Or even just enough use - Survivor of Winter after all only requires surviving a [season], and one assumes there are Survivor of other seasons options too (surviving monster breeding season has to be at least as big an achievement as not freezing to death. Presumably you could acquire several of them in a year, and there may well be similar things for other classes. And while the "first achievements" Alice overhears people discussing for their kids are perhaps Monster Encounter and Monster Slayer (I), I'd bet there are bunches of others that everyone gets Alice has skipped over. I mean it's not like encountering a Monster is an [amazingly] life changing event compared to others that do happen to everyone. Given the system's probable goal of keeping humanity alive, I'd expect Lived to Puberty, Lost Virginity and Became Parent (I, II. III....) Incidentally is Alice even menstruating? On the one hand it's something adventure stories often omit, and she'd be somewhat late, on the other it seems like it would've mattered to her survival situation (and clothing issues therein) and she wouldn't be *impossibly* late even at this point in the story about 1% of modern American girls don't before 16. Other things that seem at least as big might include Got Paid (earning enough to pay your survival needs yourself, possibly another of those seasonal ones, in which case she might not have picked it up until she had a job that lasted a full season, which I think her crane research job is the first of), Moved Out/Established/Joined a New Household (if this were a different kind of story the timing of that might be an important trigger in her relationship with Ethan and/or Cecilia), Saved A Life (the logical counterpart of Murderer, Alice hasn't actually done this unambiguously yet, but as an Organic mage is likely to pretty soon), Admitted to a Competitive School, Enlisted, Got Married, Opened a new business (Cecilia might have gotten that one), Survived a serious disease or injury (easily added for her one bad illness and wound, since the effect would presumably be better resistance to disease and faster healing, both more or less superceded by her perks), Swore an oath of fealty, blood brotherhood etc. (if the System is in the habit of enforcing this sort of thing a bit, there may be a lot of people out there with BFF oaths, accounting for some of Ethan's concern about Alice's friends), Orphaned (Alice discovering this is an option and she [didn't] get it might be a relief - her parents didn't die in the flood that summoned her) and Became a Citizen (oddly not being one didn't come up at her trial, despite part of the oath being to respect her rights as an Ilvarian citizen, but it still could - most likely either come tax time, or when some Ilvarian authority uses a perk that works on citizens and she's immune).

Sondadir

It could be " Mind Mana " , the System appears able to read the thoughts of individuals, at least to attribute them achievements

Margaret Lloyd

There obviously is language mana. Alice didn't acquire Ilvarian by a process that would work without magic, even if characters have done it at least since Tarzan, and the language to literacy automatic link requires it the other way too.

Luboš Hemala

I just realized. What if there is another person from her home :-o

Rain

Maniacal laughter is a good sign!

Enrico Snipes

Could also be "understanding mana"

bcdp

Good point. Letting her gain the achievements without help will get her better ones. He can wait some years until she begins to stagnate with those, before helping her along. Also, she is leveling faster than the "inferior" ;-) methods he knows support. Until that changes, the risk that him influencing her methods actually hampers her growth instead of helping, is not worth it.

bcdp

You mean a suicide-by-immortal event? :-P

D

There is Math Mana, then there is the newly discovered Display Mana. So isnt it reasonable that the translation is done with Language Mana?

D

Uh... no? The perk needs permission to be activated.

kyle

The perk requires consent I think.

Mike G.

Good point, although if she figures out how to do it manually, that would remove the consent barrier. Hard to see how she'd get to ethically practice crushing seeds though

Will C

She needs consent to do it so no good for combat. She could be the ultimate non lethal judicial punishment, also great in dealing with potential prisoners of war. Consent to the removal of all classes or die kind of thing.

Mike G.

I wonder if crushing someone else's class seed could be used in combat? That'd be one way to knock down a Starry Eyes member - no more main class! Assuming her perk was off cooldown of course. But maybe she can learn how to break class seeds "manually", without the perk.

Sdff

but that may hampen her achievements. it's shown that independent discovery has higher achievement rewards than guided achievements

Margaret Lloyd

Ethan is again thinking about things he had been taught about "how to level up quickly and gain decent Achievements":. Shouldn't he maybe teach some of them to his apprentice? Admittedly he hasn't known her long and she isn't doing badly on her own, but surely he can at least recommend some good skills or achievements to aim to pick up. It's obvious Alice is pretty short of normal Achievements (from the court scene if nothing else) - she basically has like 3 (Bookwork, Survivor of Winter, and Capable Enchanter) that you might expect to be relatively common for one of her classes. Surely there are some others she could consider. Ethan may not know any for Scientist or Explorer of Magic, but surely must know the common ones for the Kinetic and Organic Mage classes.

puppy0cam

honestly I'm more concerned about the legal implications of having the ability to remove her class. If she wanted to, she could remove a [criminal] related class and people wouldn't be any the wiser.

Adleiavde

Maybe shifting/rearranging the muscles/nerves/bones near when the mage core would be formed would help since the system wouldn't have to handle it and it could be regulated to ease the strain on the patient.Wouldonly work when done beforehand and not for 'sudden' mana baptism though.

MinE

Im pretty sure the synchronization process at the end with all the. flashes needs the entire body to be done first. Piping the mana to control the rate and order of the baptism sounds promising but extremely difficult especially without a combination of perks and achievements focused on examining the process in detail.

MinE

switch sub classes and primary classes not. entirely remove, but maybe a higher level priest could get the option if that was ever something they wanted.

MinE

but she's using a perk. The issue with heresy for the church of the system is using a perk can't be heresy; She is not even missing the perk given she didn't have to push it, so they'll just have to accept her ability to remove classes and the connection between classes and magic seeds. Plus as a potential immortal she is basically a soon to be saint. P.S The display mana seed is definitely going to be an issue for them. P.S.S IS [Heretic] a class and how would that work?

ShadeByTheSea

I mean she was at that point basically from the start, plus the dimensional floods causing issues like this was a matter of when not if.

bob barker

better get prepared for a Starry Eyes assault

Will C

Well erasing classes is likely to make her a full blown Heretic in comparison to be fair.

Enrico Snipes

I don't think that would work. The baptism seems to recreate nerves and muscles using mana across the whole body

Luboš Hemala

Hopefully she will able to help at least some of the villagers. Maybe setting up mana-less area to heal the most bone/organ damage or something. But still likely not enough. This is going to be rough.

Derek Walker

I wonder if she gets an achievement for destroying a class seed? I can’t recall if others have the ability to delete a class in this world? Aren’t priests able to?

Pride mystic artificer

Wow super lucky that their just so happens to be a dimentional flood right when she reaches a point where she cannot ethically proceed. And said dimensional flood just so happen to make a bunch of people who are valid test subjects who also are going to die anyway so experimenting on them would be ethical since their is a chance it can save them Anyways, love the chapter. Super interesting to see the simmilarity between magic seeds, and how they disperse, and class seeds and how they disperse. Im wondering how the system will respond to a magic class seed, and am wondering if she use the magic class seed to make/use pseudo perks or perk like abiltys.

Timothy Alexander

TFTC!! My guess on the mana baptism front would be that you put them in a manaless room, then 'pipe' mana directly to behind the heart and to the head to at least reduce the unwanted side effects.

Stephen Place

I’m curious if there will be an encounter with a system priest again at some point. Faking system notifications is her first demonstrably blasphemous ability I guess.
