I can imagine that their world will one day have a Moby Dick like story, only instead of it largely being a work of fiction, it’ll be based on the largely true events of one person’s life spent wasted on hunting down this Kraken, failing miserably every time, but somehow managing to escape every time. I am impressed by how much worldbuilding you did for a single arc world.

If they reached the actual ocean's heart, they would see a giant white pearl with the kraken chilling and holding on to it like it was its precious child. Honestly, not sure what happens after that. I was calculating strength of the Kraken at one point, but once I realized it was totally and completely unkillable for the group no matter what they did, I didn't plan past that point. The Kraken has, like... 25-ish runes? I didn't calculate exactly how many, because it just doesn't matter. It's not fightable, so I'm not sure what happens from that point. Though, it WOULD have led to the realization the islands are actually very slightly migratory; they spin around the ocean's heart like one of those solar system models you sometimes see (or used to see?) But it's pretty slow. Much faster than, say, continental plates move, but still pretty slow. Just an amusing side note.

Just out of curiosity did you ever plan what would happen if any of them somehow managed to get past the Kraken and see the ocean heart. I'm pretty sure that would be impossible even if they all rolled 130 for every relevant stat, but I am curious. P.S I'm only asking about seeing it b/c I expect anything more than that would have to wait until all their soul stats are +120 minimum.

Far underneath the islands, there's a giant magic pearl (think small island sized) which is the actual 'heart of the ocean.' It's basically a super magic item, and the reason the ocean is so weird. it's guarded by the giant Kraken, and is the reason it lives here and why the kraken is so absurdly strong compared to the rest of the planet (minus a few other exceptional beasts). As for the criticism: Honestly, I agree. Near the journey into the ocean for Miria, I realized that I really wished Sallia and Felix had a bigger role in the story, since a lot of it was Miria doing her own thing. World 2 and up are designed to make it a little easier for them to still have roles in the story, even when their rolls are trash. XD Though Sallia and Felix having better Stats and such after this life will also make it easier for me to work things out properly. I spent a while banging my head against the wall and trying to figure out if it made sense to include Sallia and Felix in the first ocean exploration, but sadly, there was just no logical reason for them to be there. I did really want them to be there though XD.

Having the potential for my plans to go off the rails is part of what makes writing this story fun, I think. XD

So out of curiosity, did you ever decide on a reason for why the ocean causes madness or was that just a part of the setting? Definitely looks like there was a lot of stuff about the island that we unfortunately didn’t get to see much of, though it will be interesting to see how this affects Sallia going forward. One slight criticism. Sallia and Felix were quite absent from this first arc. Sallia because she was of course nerfed to near uselessness and Felix because he was stuck being a hunter. Based on what Felix said last chapter I’m guessing the latter situation won’t happen much, but the former situation could theoretically happen again in the future if you roll badly. If you want to keep rolling for stats, then perhaps it’d be a good idea to write future arcs in ways that make it easier for characters to participate in even if they have their stats nerfed. The ending bit was good because Sallia’s weaknesses ended up being an actual challenge to work around instead of a nonstarter, I just wished that we had a bit more of that so we could see a bit more of what Sallia was going through rather than just the offhand mentions of what Felix and Miria realize she’s going through. Either way, I’m quite enjoying the story, and thanks for the extra bits, they satisfy my curiosity quite nicely.

I don’t think a lot of authors are willing to nuke their plans with actual rolls of the dice. It makes for a more nuanced story and I definitely agree it probably helps with character development. Kudos!

Hmm. I hadn't considered doing one for Budding Scientist. The biggest reason is because I didn't really know what I was doing when I wrote Budding Scientist; I had a lot less understanding of what kind of knowledge I needed to set up for the story. The first draft of Budding Scientist was only like, 4 or 5 chapters long before I ran into a roadblock. Those 4 to 5 chapters compressed like the first quarter of volume one for the story... very poorly. It was mostly be brainstorming on paper, with chunks of dialouge and scene thrown into the story from time to time. After the first draft, I realized that maybe knowing how the System ACTUALLY works was pretty important if I wanted to write a novel about exploring the System, so the second draft was mostly me trying to figure out what the Mysteries of the System were, so that Alice could unravel it. Kind of important to know where the destination is in a mystery before you start writing the novel, after all. Which probably should have been obvious to me, but somehow it just didn't click until I ran into a wall in draft 1 and realized the story wasn't quite working. Draft 3 was where I finally realized that the story was more of a mystery novel than an adventure LitRPG novel and redesigned my plotline accordingly XD. So the story didn't go through quite as many iterations as Markets and Multiverses; it changed from a mess to a coherent story. XD

I'm actually glad to hear that. Sometimes when I read your comments I wonder if I'm doing a terrible job writing the story or something XD. As for immediate goals... we'll get to that pretty soon in the Market. But I won't say anything else ;) I felt pretty bad for Sallia as well when I saw her rolls. She was supposed to be so strong, and instead she ended up basically on life support for volume one. She was trying so hard to make things work, and barely scraped out a W near the end. Luckily, she has enough Achievement for a little bit of upgrading... and now she has a good keyword for her primary ability! :D

Me too. When I was writing the Social Stats they felt terrible. They were the first thing I identified in the first draft where I said 'you know what? This REALLY needs to go. And the Market is fun. It was my inspiration for this story, after all XD

The Lost Pages

This was a whole lot of fun to read. Thanks for sharing this. I am really enjoying the dystopian market interspersed between worlds. Thanks for creating this wonderful story. Also, I am so glad you didn't do the social stats.

Arkeus

That was fun. I think I like the first salia story a lot, though I also like a less successful first world run for the team where they are clutching at straws. Just feels bad for her. Magic wise, Amusingly this actually feel more Xianxia than just going spiritual qi, because of how Xianxia often handles the deeper worldbuilding stuff. I would have loved seeing a golden age of market, and I had half expected the team was meant to be the results of fail safes from market leaders in cases they got utterly soul wiped. Seems I was wrong there. Still, going for the deep end first and forcing the characters to have immediate goals and needs is a classic for a reason, it works. Also sorry if I am often a bit critical in my comments- I do love the story.

MinE

that was even better than I expected. I wonder if you could make one of these for. budding scientist?
