Absolutely! Also about the sweeping, reminds me of the old Star trek movie where scotty talked into the mouse to give instructions. xD

I meant both (written + image) as a ideal but any one of those would of course be fantastic to have in her position. Beggars can't be choosers in a isekai after all! A keyboard would be real nice too of course. I'd personally go for that myself but I think most younger people these days like to default to a phone-esque point n' touch interface. I see them frequently trying to swipe or manipulate the screen first before going to the keybard! Makes me giggle a bit but from their perspective it makes perfect sense to of course. Can't wait to see how it turns out, hopefully we find out soon!!

Yes ofc, i already said that she could use the device to store her notes as a first step when i brought up the idea. But thats technically just 'picture sorage', or did you mean real handscript / word / 'thought' to text? I mean that would be very useful as you can do a lot with it. Calculation was just my idea for a foundation for future, math related processes, like analyzing the numbers in a dbase, or other math related stuff. As we where thinking about a modular system, the storage would be one, but besides that, its not real processing. So having a module that can recognize the input and transform it to text... that would have a lot of future uses, also i think thats quite complicated. Which is why i brought up a keyboard. Not as elegant as using the device for input too, but easier to use for text stuff (numbers i guess too, expect we use a digital keyboard that can be 'displayed' ^^).

Heh yeah, still it might be doable for her. Etch a Sketch's and Magna Doodles aren't unheard of as toys even today after all. Using it as a calculator would be helpful of course but I almost think using it as a word processor would be of more benefit. Finding a way to store data on it from either her thoughts or from some other imaging device or to record conversations would also be damn useful too. Dunno exactly how she'd go about doing that exactly of course. But that is where the magic comes in.

D

Magna Doodle - yes, thats the name of the thing i had in my head when writing it as a solution for an interactive display. I knew of how a 'doodle' was build from a school project (not that i remembered the names at all, sry... kind of bad with names and terms in the first place ^^). I do remember the sketch, now that ive googled it. Might be the easier solution (from reading up the description of how its made), but i only know that you can make a imitation of the 'doodle' with simple means... and as im not the biggest tinkerer (did i mention i totally lack the patience for that kind of thing? xD), ill take your word on it that its doable. So display solution (and to a lesser degree input) confirmed. Now what to do with it? Calculator, or other ideas to lay a foundation for future data processing? I mean, we go a bit away from the whole story and more into the 'what would i do in that situation', but hey, what else can we do while waiting for the next chapter? ^^

tibbish

Etch a Sketch! That would be a nifty idea for a display, GUI-esque interaction method, and possibly memory as well! They're mechanically simple too and aluminum dust shouldn't be hard to make with magic. Another option in this vein would be a Magna Doodle if aluminum dust proves to be somehow difficult to get. Mineral oil mixed with soap would work fine as a fluid to suspend the magnetic particles in.

D

Agreed, a one do it all would be perfect, but it would also take a lot of time and effort to build one from scratch. If she had a base of operations for a longer time, like when/if she is at the academy, she could try that. So its more of a 'take the wants and needs apart and solve them separately'. Personally, id go with those... old(?)... magnetic children draw board. Or something of that kind for display and input and then try to find a way for data storage. That at least, would be my first 'go to'. It dosnt solve the problem of data processing at all, but it would be my first step to create something that can store my notes. After solving the i/o and storage problem, id go to the first semi processing system. Maybe a data base. Displaying tables should be possible at that point, it would be more of a challenge to make the system 'understand' the input. Maybe create a keyboard at that point? Like a second plane with a keyboard on it? Could be disguised as a book... ^^ edit: or hey, maybe first trying my hand on a calculator. I mean sure, she has a perk for that if i remember right. But a working calculator would be the base for all math related data handling in the future.

tibbish

Yeah data handling would be the best bang for buck. Ultimately she is a "brainy" type and finding ways to utilize her otherworld knowledge requires more knowledge to work too. Something portable would be best unless absolutely required by some sort of requirement. She doesn't know where she'll be in a year and lots of things are likely to change for her over that time frame anyways so being able to take stuff with her easily is a big boon too. A generic "1 does it all" machine would be best but I doubt she'll be able to make one. A few task dedicated machines would still be practical though.

D

Well, f*ck, my comments got deleted. x) Shoudnt try to edit them to often i guess. But im so bad at doing that in the 'first try' that ill always rework them multiple times. ^^ To make a long story short: It came down to, talisman -> you spoke abut tile rendering, got confused about the 2d to 3d thing as they still fail at that even today (like the fusion reactor, it should be working in 10 years - every 10 years since 1950 ^^). I agree, IOW would be... well if its only for her, she probably can just do a custom job, but that would be sloppy, and she dosnt strike me as such. Also a 'mental imagine and intend' language, bad idea, again youre right. Wont give valid data if its not consistent in its results and reproducibility. So, if we go with 'bit slicing' as in 'creating modular libraries' that can be linked to the main program, im on board. Main question would be: What does she want, or better: 'what would we want if we'd like to science the system?' Personally, id go with data handling. Tablet, laptop, some kind of IOP based system that allows me to capture data, analyze, interact and store it. Besides her system perks, she can still make individual stuff, depending on her experiments, but i guess that would be (my) focus in her situation. Whats your take on that?

tibbish

Hahaha yeah Talisman is a blast from the past. It failed but not because the idea was terrible per se. Its actually a really slick concept! I was thinking of Talisman because it used multiple images (2D) to form constructs (3D) and the magic enchanting that she seems to have access to also uses images (and intent too of course) so I figured that might be one approach to make a machine. Or perhaps just to use enchanting in a different fashion. Yes a flowchart would help organize her ideas. I meant for the enchanting itself as a programmable model of some sort. Ehhh you're probably right: bit slice computing is ancient history that had its golden days in the 70's and early 80's. By the mid 80's it was on its way out as process tech improved. Still it'd of been slick to see it done! And you're certainly right too that technically its all just arbitrary symbols for what we'd normally think of for a computer. I was just trying to highlight the differences between thought and intent enchanting vs bits and stuff. No I'm not a expert on VAX and such but I was around when it was still in somewhat common use. I always got a kick out of those machines. Something about being able to take the CPU apart and put it back together again with your bare hands always made me smile!

D

Uhhhhm, talisman? Realy? Sry, you seem clearly ahead of me in that field, seeing how i had to google for VAX (was a bit before my time). But i cant really see how talisman comes into this. I never took a deeper look into vpl's - lava (had to google to even find its name again ^^) was one of those i took a brief look (and only because someone brought up idiotic stuff like piet and brainfuck and my friends tryed all kinds of stuff with those(sry, lost interest pretty fast... xD)) and i think it would fit better with what i think you where going at with talisman. Or, you know, just do a flowchart. Its simple, precise to a certain level and goes along with the whole 'mental image' thing. Again, no idea why you brought up talisman, so i might have missed your point. Also, damn you for making me read up on processor architecture, especially one so... ancient. x) Certainly didnt look into that stuff last since since the early 2k's, and at that time it was more of 'interest' then true need. ^^ Before, ok, you had to know your stuff, but meh. Bit slice did ring a bell, but had to look it up to know what youre talking about. Thx, i actually enjoyed it. :) And while i agree, it might be the better solution, are you really thinking that mc, who is a 2k's kid, would know about stuff i had to looks so deep into my memories, i thought id fall out back into the 80'is? I mean, she probably knows about logic gates, but how far could she get with those alone? Now i kinda wanna imagine myselfe in a magic world, trying to be the first zuse. Would i even succeed? I mean i know the basics, i know some strange tidbits, but, how far can you go with those alone without investing a shit ton of time? It a bit like those 'back to the wild' videos on youtube that where in some time ago. Just with processors, and, you know, magic, in a fantasy world. Hard to do a video about that i guess. ^^ ... Also, calling 'bit's being arbitrary symbols... is right, but then, what isnt? ^^

tibbish

Weeeelll they sound like they function off of the enchanters thoughts and images rather than bits or some other arbitrary symbols based programming. So maybe more like a magical version of Microsoft's Talisman image processor (GPU) that failed + more typical object oriented programming but with mental images and intent instead of a language and rigid processing/memory model? That would make them both easier and harder to program over all I'd think. Easier because you could just use your thoughts instead of remembering a language or creating a compiler from scratch to target a given architecture. Harder because not everyone thinks of things the same way so each computer would have to be built and programmed whole by 1 mage and would end up processing things at least a bit differently each time. Or IOW they'd all be essentially bespoke custom machines (for the rich+ hard to use) rather than mass reproducible (cheap+ easy to use) items. That is why I brought up bit slicing in my earlier comment. Bit slice computers have their own issues (performance and scaling) but the model of building a computer out of smaller custom, simplified, and specialized parts (even from different companies with differing specs!) is tried and true. Even if she doesn't know about the old VAX machines some of the concepts are still around in programming.

D

The description about 'dump enchantments' made me think they are two layers above processors, who only understand yes and no. ^^ Next step would be assembler before we reach the (none)object oriented program languages. Wonder if she figures that out and if she can do some cool stuff with it. I mean, she was going to play around with robots, so she probably has some basic understanding of programming. Thx for the chapter, will be eagerly waiting for more. :))

tibbish

Time to make some magic bit slice computers!
