That was a typo, yeah. Woops! Fixed!

the broken mana needs to have the specific indentity of kinetic mana for it to work. dimensional mana is vastly different, and the mana in those sorroundings may not even be coherent enough to be called dimensional mana.

Actually that isn't really clear at all with viruses. There are actual viruses that do qualify as living or at least half alive (mimivirus, has genes for self propagation) and scientists are constantly questioning if their definition of alive is correct. Current consensus is that they --generally-- aren't but they also admit that could change with more information AND that there are exceptions to this that don't fit standard definitions and they are at a bit of a loss to deal with. Comparing to Ebola is bad because Ebola spreads rapidly. The only thing stopping it from spreading everywhere is it kills its hosts too fast. If broken mana worked like Ebola than the whole planet would've long been converted to broken mana since it doesn't need people to spread. Also mana appears to be a property of her new reality, which means its likely some sort of field effect, which rules out the whole virus/living being approach by default. Magnetic fields, EM, etc are also not living but can still spread to a limited degree too if the conditions are right.

Possible typo. You mention Illa using a mana tendril on the broken mana, but then instead say it touches her skin. Which if not a typo, is still confusing. The "magical seeds" concept is still a pretty cool one. All sorts of fun possibilities. Can you make multiple seeds of the same type? So a kinetic mage might get themselves two kinetic seeds instead of diversifying if they get the right perk to get another seed. Can one make a seed that's specifically a "meta" seed used to alter or assist other seeds? Or a seed to supplement other seeds to refill them faster? How about if one understood the concept well enough, a seed that produces mana to allow for less deadly mana baptisms? Then of course higher tier concepts like space, time, gravity, magnetism.. Or more esoteric ones like sustenance, fear, sight, and hair. By making it so that a mana seed can be based around just about any idea, it allows for so many interesting applications and combinations. And by requiring you actually understand the concept and the effect of low vs high mana conversion, you've provided a limiter that manages to make it weaker but more enjoyable for it.

MadGod

Well, we already had magic seeds former through the comprehension of concepts (the dao), mana core containing a mage's personalized mana (dantian/golden core), body refining via mana and now there's even 'ideas' imprinted on mana (intent). Sounds to me like westernized cultivation alright, not that I don't like it or anything.

Viruses aren't really living things (you can look this up if you don't believe me), they're infective genetic programs that alter cell behaviour. If dimensional broken mana is self-propagating, then the only necessary ingredient for a true mana-borne virus would be an appropriately tuned payload for increased infectivity (ie. it just needs to be more efficiently contagious). I really don't think your objection holds up. What they have now (with dimensional broken mana) could be compared to Ebola. It's deadly locally, but its spreading capacity is limited. Developing a proper 'manaphage' would be a case of creating a more efficient delivery vector, ensuring that the payload ('idea' tied to the mana) can affect a broader area.

tibbish

There isn't any indication of it being living so the whole manaphage thing doesn't add up. Its more like the state of mana is persistent and can effect mana around it when it reaches some sort of critical mass but doesn't necessarily appear to be self propagating otherwise the world would've already been taken over by broken mana or whatever it is you want to call it. They also already appear to have some sort of clean up procedure for broken mana in story as well. It was mentioned that they do it periodically to prevent build up of broken mana.

Niraada

If Alice is correct, then her research could lead to the development of 'manaphages'-- specialised virulent mana signatures ('ideas'). If one could develop it enough, it could even be possible to develop innoculating counter-signatures that prevent the proliferation of the 'manaphage'. Annnnnnd... if that's possible, anyone in power would be almost compelled to pursue it, because if someone else manages it, they would have effective control over regulating mana while everyone else would be at the mercy of the 'manaphage'. Being able to deny mana to an area or group of people is equivalent to disarming the opponent and would be a powerful political tool, let alone weapon of war. If one could innoculate their own mages to the 'manaphage', they could deploy it along their borders to make their lands unassailable, or push it out in front of armies to go on unstoppable conquest. To make matters worse, it is a genie that can't be put back in the bottle. Once the idea exists, it will proliferate until someone succeeds or worse, partially succeeds. If someone develops a failed product, they could see something akin to a mana-borne bubonic plague.

tibbish

She is basing her hunches off of observed effect + her hunches are usually fairly simplistic so its not unreasonable she'd be frequently correct. Its not like she deduced Kreb's cycle off just the color of a leaf here.

Benjamin Smith

Alice sure seems to have a lot of correct hunches. Is this part of the "increased support from the System"? Is it guiding her ideas somehow?

Katherine

>MC is already analyzing the fundamentals of mana and magic Clearly, she's already got her cultivator cheat power. xd

@author: Yes, forcing it is kinda bad, but maybe you also needed it as a distraction? By muddlign through you may have shoved off some of the dark thoughts you would have had otherwise? Dosnt matter realy if youre doing better now, thats all what counts, right? :)

D

Uhm, did i miss something? Since when did this turn into some kind of cultivation novel? x)) I like the whole aspect based thinking of magic. If magic is based on thoughts and reacts to concepts and abstracts, it would be a very interesting magic system, imho.

Oh this is great! Alice can now unlock the [Cultivator] class when she attempts to cultivate [Broken Mana] into her [Core] ! A forest full of [Broken Mana] is a good place to start! Or probably just a [Lesser Cultivation] skill in the [Explorer of Magic] class.
