I'm sorry but what you're saying just doesn't work out at all for reasons already explained. *shrugs* Plenty of other areas to theory craft if you like though!

thkiw

I think it works.

thkiw

It could also do the oppisite and cause a 'strengthening effect' by casually increasing the integrity.

thkiw

Active generation could cause matter to decay further, which helps in most science fiction because constructs not held by mana have different sorts of integrity (tend to dissappear).

tibbish

As I just said though synchronization would require interaction on a fundamental level. Same thing with psychic forces. Requiring both still can't make a 1 way interaction work out. And generation is still a interaction. I don't know why you think it isn't? For instance: aluminum isn't magnetic BUT a magnet can still interact with one and produce effects (it'll generate force and heat) if you move it around near aluminum. Adding more steps to interactions doesn't mean they suddenly become 1 way. It just means there is more complexity.

thkiw

Interaction requires both syncronization qnd psychic force. This would not interact with the body but a hidden layer. Generation doesn't require constant manipulation but it's just a higher element of creation. Mana could cause the created energy to gather but cannot influence it besides creating it. We could say it influences another hidden layer and call it the psyche. Actively generating stuff versus passively generating stuff can have different effects.

tibbish

You can add psychic force sure but it won't make a 1 way interaction work out. It would work as way of describing the means with which people can control mana but once you're controlling something you're interacting with it by default.

thkiw

Okay so it's like this: 1 - mana requires mental or psychic force for normal interactions. (2) a being must be syncronized to it in order to infouence it (3) mana can generate and infpuence matter but not the other way around (4) mana subsists within dm but doesn't consist it.

tibbish

Synchronization implicitly requires interaction though. You can't sync up anything (heat, momentum, spin, etc) unless they're interacting by default. Otherwise the mana would just pass on through someone while doing nothing. Also by default if the mana generated normal matter than it'd still be influencing normal matter either on creation or in the environment at the time of creation. Symmetry violations are a problem that require legit creepy (and hidden) things to be happening on a fundamental level to exist. Google Superdeterminism if you want to know more (you don't, trust me). Spitballing ideas and theorycrafting is indeed fun. IMO though once you starting including IRL stuff than the IRL rules and info should apply because otherwise it doesn't really make sense (which breaks suspension of disbelief) and can ruin the drama or impact of a given plot line.

thkiw

We could add psychic force into the mix and it solves most problems with interaction. I'm not sure about generation though.

thkiw

First, a level of syncronization is required. That allows it to gather around a person to some effect. Second, I didn't say 'influence'. I said generates. If mana 'generates' matter, or superimedes matter, only one way influence could occur Mana can generate matter, and most likely not the other way around. Ah, I guess that's weak since dm doesn't generate any forces to any noticable effect. Still, mana could subsist within dark matter. Or it would at the very least, were it to exist. I knwo there are a lot of very smart and educated people studying it, but it's still fun to speculate.

tibbish

Even if it was a 1 way influence it'd still be having some sort of measurable effect. A lot of very smart people with lots and lots of real expensive and powerful equipment have spent decades looking for some sort of measurable effect (in this case decay into more measurable forms of energy such as X-Rays and/or heat) and they're not coming up with much of anything. That is why CDM, despite having plenty of its own issues, still holds up the best as model for Dark Matter. It fits the observed data (of very little to no interaction) the best out of all the others.

tibbish

Air, electrostatic fields, and magnetic fields are also invisible and yet interact just fine with other things. Being invisible doesn't matter much since human senses are pretty crap quite frankly. Also if mana only interacted with mana than no one could possibly control it because they couldn't effect it or do a thing with it either. Control or interaction by a person, special or otherwise, means that on a fundamental level it HAS to be something you (or other more normal matter and/or field effect) would effect. Why? Because the matter that special person would be made of wouldn't be special at all. And since mana can effect 'regular' matter than it would HAVE to in turn be effected by 'regular' matter too. Interaction to that degree guarantees that its a 2 way street. Figuratively speaking since as you note only special people can use mana: just because not everyone can use that street doesn't mean its not there. I mean I can't inherently control a (weak) magnet myself but it'll still be able to effect me in some fashion even if I can't notice it right? Now if you start cranking that magnet up to make it really powerful than things you wouldn't think would be magnetic at all can be made to be so BTW. There are some real cool YT's on guys levitating water and frogs with super strong magnets if you care to look for them. But that wouldn't be obvious or apparent behavior with a typical fridge or magnetite magnet at all.

thkiw

It could be a one way influence. You would never know.

thkiw

But the fact that it doesn't interact with itself appears strange. I'm not sure how much we can learn about it when we cannot even quantify the stuff. There could be a level of normalization across larger distances that doesn't enable us to see clusters. I'm not sure about that.

thkiw

To me it makes perfect sense. Mana is invisible. Mana only interacts with mana. Only beings awakened to mana can use mana, others cannot interacts with it. Ironically, that requires you to be attuned to it first in order for it's manipulation to be appilcable. A level of syncronization that allows you to create from it semi etherial force that's partially composed of dark matter and partiall of real matter. All in all, it can make natural phenomena appear out of nowhere. It makes sense that if mana exisflted it would be 'dark mana' without known methods of application or interaction. (I.e, it generates matter)

tibbish

The best observational data they have on DM strongly suggests the CDM is closer to reality than the SIDM (self interacting dark matter) model unfortunately. I (and most other scientists) would love it if these more bizzarre, weird, and exotic theories would hold up (since it would allow for really cool stuff to be possible and practical) but reality keeps shooting them down.

tibbish

I'm not bullshitting you at all. Everything I said is true and known about Dark Matter IRL. Yes its a fiction but if you're going to reference IRL things like Dark Matter than IRL knowledge will still apply. As for "types of interaction we don't know about" fields and forces covers pretty much all observed matter and energy extremely well. Not perfectly. But well enough that throwing out maybes isn't going to be good enough. As a fictional story its perfectly fine for the author to just say "well this reality has mana and the MC's original one didn't" and leave it at that. Getting bogged down in details won't help the author or the story. So long as what is introduced into the story is used in a internally logical and consistent way it'll all be fine IMO. And unfortunately anything like FTL isn't looking to be even vaguely possible with non-black hole-esque energy densities so yeah we're probably mostly stuck on Earth or maybe a few nearby solar systems at best with generational space ships. Which are still very much fictional. As near as observational data suggests "extra large clumps" of DM aren't going to happen outside of VERY strong gravitational fields which would be super dangerous to the Earth and humanity even with Star Trek levels of tech and pretty impractical to deal with or test on. The stuff is just a giant PITA to deal with at best.

thkiw

In which case it would create a snowballing effect. If dark matter can interact with other dark matter.

thkiw

I was saying more like it requires mental force, that cannot reall be quantified or measured. Or requires some sort of syncronization in order for it to refine living beings. It can be impervious to sense or touch but not other methods of detection we didn't know existed. Which, to my opinion, could be many. Since it compounds 90% of matter out there. We could be living in a mirror universe we cannot see or touch but only sense in avague mental projection and various other esoteric methods. Eh. Just sticking to 'normal matter cannot interact with it' with prejidice because normal known projections don't work is too far fetched. Do you believe that we will never be able to interact with 90% of matter out there? Modern theories are constantly refined and measured. There could be extreme circumstances in which we could interact with dark matter. One of them being extra large clusters of the stuff.

thkiw

Don't bullshit me. All we know is that we cannot interact with it and that it projects force with inverse to the distance. We don't know whether dark mana can interact with dark mana or not. We don't know whether it can be clustered or manipulated. For all we know it's like ten different sort of matter and some of them don't even project weight inverse to distance. Maybe there's mana put there, maybe there's magic pixies. It's not far fetched. It's fiction, not exact science.

tibbish

Dark Matter can't be moved or touched by normal matter or field effects except gravity, which technically isn't even a real force. Dark Matter also isn't something that can be pumped into someone. It'll just pass right through them without interacting with any of their matter no matter what. If a being can be "pumped full" of mana than by default they're "touching" it in the sense that they're interacting with it on some fundamental fashion since they're being filled up with it. That might mean they're not aware of touching it or it effecting them but it'll still be happening. Also if they control it in any fashion that means they can touch it and vice versa too. After all in order to control something you have to be able to physically interact with it to a fairly significant degree. Dark Matter is some seeeerrriiiouuussslllyyy weird stuff and I don't think most people really grasp what "it doesn't really interact with what we think of as normal matter" actually means.

thkiw

Mana cannot be moved or touched, only controlled by beings pumped with mana. It can only be manipulated by other mana. It makes sense.

tibbish

It couldn't Dark Matter. That stuff basically doesn't interact at all with 'normal' matter (scare quotes because what we think of as normal matter really isn't) at all except through gravity. That is why scientists are having such a hard time trying to understand it. They can only study it obliquely, and speculate based on those inferred observations, at best. Mana can be controlled by people and effect 'normal' matter stuff outside of gravitational phenomena so therefore it couldn't be Dark Matter. Also different reality can mean different rules so fictionally or otherwise it'd be totally possible for there to be no mana in the MC's original reality.

Fixed!

Ok, that worked, at least it shows that it works on my laptop... so, does it work for you guys too? I mean do you see a picture? Meaning it could be a solution to make a screenshot from your tables - @acaswell - and include them with simple html like i did. Or you could use the <i>div</i> html comment for tables (if i remember right) to make them yourselfe. But if you whant the same as in RR, a screenshot would probably the best and then include it with <i>img</i> html command.

I just want to say that I really enjoy that you write these sorts of interactions and don't just skimp over details. :)

You forgot her mathematics skill (chapter 15)

An alternative for tables is attaching a PDF or epub file in your posts of the chapter rather than putting the chapter in the post. That's the approach the author of Delve uses

thkiw

It's not impossible that our world has mana but just a very small amount of it (at least in theory) like dark matter or such. Also, not having any mana in her body just like a six year old is a good thing. Since that is the age for expedient growth, I gthink the most obvious reason here is that mana invading the body causes it to develop. Like osmosis filling up a natural living container that slowly learns how to better use water. Hmmmm... that makes me wonder. If she artificially attracts mana to her body and keeps it at bay with a barriar, should she grow much faster? Useful thought. But then again, making your body use your mana might be dangerous. Since it'll make it harder for it to live without it. Wait, does the amount of mana in the body naturally grows even after the body has inner mana that is comparable to that in the atmosphere? If that is true, than being in a highly mana saturated environment could increase growth AND have reduced danger according to this theory. Since mana doesn't naturall escape the body. At most she'll need a rehabilitation process in case her body need to build a matural mana barriar... hmmm....
