Rip Woodham

The thing is she'd lose Sense Hostility if she dropped Survivor. I doubt this Priest is looking at her like she's going to be someone special, become an Immortal etc. Or that her leveling speed will be incredible. Her Survivor class is already kind of high, so even if she will be leveling it little... *shrug* She can always change it later, but right now she is weak and a target and it is both her highest class by far and offering the best survivability by far. And as readers we know it will work out heh because she will certainly still have life or death moments in her future.

Kapelteta

Yeah I can understand that... on the other hand you could flavor it along the lines of finding/keeping track of stuff more than seeing the future? Think more douser than soothsayer. It could be hard to come up with higher level abilities for such a class tho... Mostly what I was getting at is that survivor just doesn't work very well with what she wants to do whereas scholar does. She just needs to find a class that gives her SOME combat and or survival ability that also works with her other classes at least a little. So she needs to flex those research and critical thinking muscles and get to finding something that works. After all she did just have a revalation that she was going about scholar the wrong way, so I don't see survivor leveling very well if she's not actually out in the wilds surviving. Think we are editing our comments at the same time. Usually no one responds fast enough that editing to expound and clarify my point is a problem lol

I hope so too. I'm heartily sick of bad things happening. The world should give it a rest for a while, darnit!

acaswell

Divination magic doesn't exist in my setting - it goes too close to being able to see the future, which I distinctly dislike as a setting because I have had too many bad reading experiences involving prophecies. To be fair, I've also had plenty of good experiences with prophecies, especially when I was younger, but at this point I'm heartily sick of them. [Scholar] DOES normally make more sense here - that being said [Survivor] offers excellent danger detection, and the number one way for a mage to die from someone at the same level as them is sneak attack. The Priest is suggesting she keep it because the class has a lot of options similar to {Sense Hostility} if she gets a few more levels, and gives her defense against the biggest danger against her - sneak attacks catching her unprepared. But yes, if she wasn't under threat from Mage Hunters and the Society of Starry Eyes, he would never have suggested dropping [Scholar] and would have been strongly recommending dropping [Survivor] instead.

Kapelteta

The advice from the priest seems a bit odd. Does he have alterior/hidden motives? Scholar makes more sense than survivor in her build. Especially if she can get synergistic experience for scholar, scientist, explorer of magic, and enchanter. Heck she should probably just switch out survivor for warmage or an equivalent. That way any time she is doing anything magic or research oriented she gets xp. Although warmage probably only gets xp from using magic in fights so... still maybe. Something like diviner I could see working instead of survivor for danger sense AND would probably help with research! I could see her switching out scholar for something domestic like house witch to get some creature comforts, but enchanter probably covers that. If this ends up being a story about her going out and exploring along with her research something along the lines of field researcher instead of scholar would be great. Explorer of magic, Scientist, Diviner, Field Researcher (an upgrade for scholar maybe?), and Enchanter seem like a good set. Assuming she could make/maintain magic items away from a workshop.

Kapelteta

Second this op. Alot of its probably the arrest and trial stuff... thats been done badly so many times that it puts people off, but it fits in your story and doesn't go down any of the cringey routes. So you are good there. Just gotta get far enough along to reassure people.

Rip Woodham

I really like the direction you're taking the story. The scare with her being arrested had people up in arms pre-emptively (myself included) and once it's clear you're not going *there* or beating that horse, RR will look better. It's the best time to push out a few faster releases if not for real life. But yeah, I really enjoyed this chapter and really appreciate how you're writing. Please keep it up and give us more as you're able. :)

Hmmm... having classes that both do the same thing IS theoretically kinda overkill but still nice, since they level together. Meaning the three classes 'explorer' 'scientist' and 'scholor' would synergize with each other. Since explorer of magic allows her to benefit from research they would do well together, AND having additional mage seeds means having generic magic is gold - classes like enchanter or alchemist is ideal. I thought more in the line of dropping the survivor class and taking something more combat specific, while keeping the scholor class alongside something generic like enchanting or alchemy (maybe both?). The only perk from survivor that's worth it is sense hostility, and I doubt there aren't ANY combat classes, or even mage dereived ones, that don't have what she seeks, but with actually useful perks besides temperture resistance. But it could be dangerous to drop even if it's temporary, I guess that dropping scholor and putting it in a secondary slot is also quite useful. I kinda frown upon taking kinetic mage, since she would benefit much more from a generic magic combat class like warmage. also, she'd have multiple seeds, which means the class will be much less useful than it would originally.

acaswell

It's not necessarily WELL KNOWN so much as KNOWN. The book within the Church of Levels related to classes is, at heart, something closer to a pseudo-internet run by Perks, where the church's records of classes and Perks are stored. This means lots of things are recorded in it. The church, of course, does a lot of verification whenever new stuff is recorded, but it also means that most classes that have existed at one point or another are recorded in at least some detail, especially before level 75 where most people don't reach and where information starts to become absolute chaos due to the nature of post-75 Perks (which haven't been discussed yet). Therefore, it's not necessarily well known - the church just knows of the class and has records of it, same as with almost every class in existence. Given the requirements for the [Scientist] class it's actually fairly rare, since to acquire it one must have a wrong belief that they believe with all their heart and then reject said belief in search of truth. However, I thought the odds of no [Scientists] ever cropping up over the entire course of humanity's history in this world was pretty low, so the church SHOULD have some record of it. This will hopefully get some time to be discussed in the story at some point, but since it's more of a world-building notes thing than a 'secret' I don't mind discussing it. Especially since sometimes, I intend to discuss a little tidbit of worldbuilding and then it gets pushed back over and over because I can't find a good place for it (glares at worldbuilding notes about languages and language skills).

Flogoyog

Great chapter, hoping the personal emergencies calm down for a while and you can start getting rid of the anxiety.

Obran

Not sure about "Scientist" being a well-known class in this world, but hey... it's your fiction. Thanks for the chapter.

Lictor Magnus

This 100%. You'll have a vocal group in the begging that think the story should go certain way. Most of those people will either eventually 0like what the story turns into or stop reading. Maybe start reading the royalroad comments once you're like 50 or a 100 chapters deep. At that point most the haters will be gone and most of the comments will be either thank you for the chapter messages, observations on the chapter, or somewhat constructive criticism.

Isaac Boyles

Nah, you're doing fine. The people who are particularly vocal in the comments there, especially for stories just getting started, tend to be uhhh...I would say that they like their fantasy stories to be a specific way and are a bit rigid about that. This has been a good read so far, but it's still early enough in plot terms that I'd take any particularly negative reactions with a large grain of salt.

acaswell

Actually, that's pretty good to hear. I've been having some major anxiety about my writing as well, wondering if maybe I'm actually just terrible at writing. The rating on Royalroad (the main 'free' site where the story is posted, if you are unfamiliar with it) has been falling, a lot of people seem upset in comments sometimes, and honestly I've just been kind of doubting everything recently. Positive comments really make me feel better, so thanks a bundle, stranger on the internet! My last week has been pretty shitty, and this makes me feel better.

Isaac Boyles

Given the circumstances, this was way better than I was expecting. Had I not known of your loss I wouldn't have known anything was wrong. Not sure if that helps or anything given that the anxiety isn't about the writing in this case, but I figured it doesn't hurt to hear you're doing a good job at something in a trying time

Lictor Magnus

It's good to have you back. I'm glad your mom is doing well!

D

Oh, have to see if there are more infos about her new class in the revision. Also i feel you, worry over others is more stressful then going to the medic yourself. Hope things will get better for you. :)

Thanks for the chapter, Keep up the good work if you need anything reach out.
