Magic Blaze

Okay since I haven't done these in a while and Alice is about to get three new perks next week I'm going to try and predict what perk combinations she will pick and what those perks might do: Survivor Sixth Sense (Survivor 25) + Sense Hostility (Survivor 35) —> ??? Alice has already mentioned that the two perks work well together and combining them would be a good way to further increase her ability to detect danger. Enhanced Training (Survivor 30) + Extended Organics (Survivor 50) —> ??? Enhanced training is a perk that has frankly outlived its purpose as Alice no longer trains as intensely or frequently as before since she has a lot of research to do and has mostly figured out how to train properly through the use of the perk. I believe combining the two perks could give her the ability to train and increase the range and effectiveness of her Extended Organics (Survivor 50) not to mention the combined perk would potentially combine well with The Science of Mana Deprivation (Scientist 50) when either Survivor or Scientist reaches level 75. Explorer of magic Enhanced regeneration (Explorer of Magic 10) + New Scholar perk combining Scholar of Magic and Delve into the Arcane —> ??? I’m unsure if combining Enhanced regeneration with a T2 perk at level 75 is possible(It might be only possible with a T2 class). But All three of the perks have amazing synergy and combining them could overcome Scholar of Magic’s limitations of needing to read a book, listen to a lecture, or do schoolwork to increase the conversion ratio of her magic seeds. Scholar Scholar of Magic (Scholar 35) + Delve into the Arcane (Scholar 50) —> ??? Scholar of magic lets her increase her seeds magic conversion ratio while reading or listening about the information on that magic seed while Delve into the arcane boosts magic regeneration since these two perks have very similar effects and activation requirements it would probably improve both of her perks abilities. Improved Memory (Scholar 5) + Photographic Memory (Scholar 25) —> ??? Pretty obvious the perk would grant better memory overall and considering Alice has been getting stumped because she can’t recall where she saw those system fractals before she might choose it. Accelerated Thinking (Scholar 15) + Improved Multitasking (Scholar 30) —> ??? Simply better brain power, what’s not to like? The perk could also help increase her combat strength.

Belated thanks for the chapter. Get well. If you are not completely healthy yet you might also want to check your blood clotting because many of covid's aftereffects are related to that

Thank you for explaining, also Alice is using organic tendrils to manipulate grass in chapter 77 :-)

MinE

That’s fortunate.

Tendrils, although physical contact is often a requirement for some of the Perks Organic Mages use to deal with mana resistance. Granted, most Mages also need Patient Consent to use said Perks, but Immortals can definitely deal with mana resistance problems much more easily than the average mage. So, for Organic mages in particular, although they can use mana tendrils just like all other forms of Mage, they tend to be a little more touchy-feely than other Mages due to the Perk pool for their Class. But, naturally, that's also pretty dependent on what Perks they pick up/combine and how it all ends up working together.

Swords, daggers, and hand to hand combat vary greatly in usefulness depending on what kind of mage you are. For an Organic Mage, Alice would absolutely be pushed to learn those - after all, Organic Mages work more like regenerating superpowered soldiers. However, for a Kinetic Mage, their first weapon is usually their environment, meaning that unless they adopt a pretty specialized Perk set they tend to veer away from hand to hand combat. I generally assumed that they take a more mid-ranged and long-ranged role in combat, with close up combat being a last resort. For example, I also figure Elder Sujia doesn't know hand to hand combat, because her Perks and Achievements just put her in a very different role, and she has never felt the need to generalize her abilities to include close combat when she would usually rather just shred an opponent from a distance.

Statistically speaking, Budding Scientist chapters tend to be between 3K and 4K words, roughly speaking. (Or at least that's my target goal for each chapter - I do occasionally spill over 4K a bit)> This chapter was around 3.6K words when I checked it (admittedly, before the final edit, but the final one doesn't usually shift word count by more than 200-300 words), so it's about average in length. My beta reader did also say the chapter seemed shorter than usual though, which is pretty interesting.

Magic Blaze

Hmm unlikely if you reread chapter 34 and 92 you can notice that ethan doesn't have a healing seed. And the immortal in ch34 was the person who pioneered the field. So unless Ethan has the ability to break down magic seeds like Alice then i don't think they are tge same person.

Luboš Hemala

Someone remind me, can they apply Organic magic through mana tendrils or does it require touch?

Luboš Hemala

That would be a serious plot twist! But it could be.. Though I wonder if he could keep his other identity secret for so long.

Stephen Place

Lol I reread just recently as well and did not catch that!

Eternaly_Lost

Poor Alice, I guess unknowingly joining the Society of Starry Eyes is technically a way to keep herself safe from them. I didn't even realize what Ethan was doing until I did a reread and discovered in the interlude back in Chapter 34 that the Society of Starry Eyes was founded by an immortal that has a permit to study Dimensional Magic. Although I could see it being another Immortal, maybe one that is thought to be dead, the fact that Ethan handed Alice the information he did in this chapter looks like he's going to draw her into the group sooner rather than later.

Luboš Hemala

I so wish Ethan would push Alice for some sword/dagger/hand-to-hand combat practice. After all, she is his "combat" mage apprentice. ;-)

Is this what happens when the walls between two worlds start to fail?

Bryan D

My COVID instance kept clinging on also. The overall sickness was weakness, coughing, and early fever. The weakness and coughing seemed to hang on well after a negative-test. Those were the most frustrating.

Bryan D

As far as an achievement, we haven’t seen the after-action review. Might be an achievement unread…

Silerus

Given that she was instantly recognized as an [Outworlder], I'd think the System would already know that a broken magic seed is extremely deadly and nigh-unhealable. As for the Achievement to not taking into account the difficulty of healing, that also doesn't really make sense. All Achievements are, at least in part, based on the difficulty of the task. Like [Survivor of Winter] was only Rarity 3, even though it was super difficult to survive for Alice back then. This healing shouldn't be an exception. Also, I'm not actually mad she didn't get an Achievement or something, more just... confused? As if the universal rules of the story didn't do what they were supposed to, and it left me with mixed feelings. It doesn't matter much in the big ppicture, though.

Enrico Snipes

It's possible that it's not considered an achievement because it wasn't yet registered as a hard to heal affliction, or perhaps healing achievements don't take into account the difficulty for others to heal the same affliction

Silerus

Yeah, but that doesn't really make sense. She only managed to upgrade her [Seeker of Truth] Achievement by using the powers provided by that Achievement (the ability to see mana without interference). So based on this, using Achievement-provided powers to advance an Achievement should be possible.

MinE

Maybe it’s harder to get an achievement for just using an achievement boost perk for its intended purpose or b/c the system doesn’t like giving multiple unique achievements for closely rated events.

D

The side effects sounds unpleasant. Was the chapter short or was that just me liking it to much? And if the chapter was short, was it related to you not feeling well? Because you did a very good job in me wanting to read more, even when you are not feeling well. Very good, but may be put yourself first? As much as i like reading your story, id prefer it that youre healthy. :)

Silerus

I also find it a bit strange that she didn't gain an Achievement by healing Samantha. There's certainly a difference between breaking her own and Cecilia's magic seeds for research, and what happened here. Achievements are based on difficulty and rarity of an accomplishment, plus (probably in some cases) perceptions of those who see one's actions. Here we had Alice, witnessed by an Immortal, healing a person from an nigh-incurable condition. Something probably impossible to do for anyone other than her. The circumstances seem perfect to get an Achievement from this. It was rare, it was difficult (not for her, but overall), and it was witnessed. And its not like using abilities gained from Achievements make it impossible to gain further ones that way. If that was the case, she would never have gotten [Seeker of Truth] as it required assistence from [Outworlder] - "Increased Support from the System," etc.

Luboš Hemala

Yeah, covid can stick around for a while, so take care of yourself. Thank you for the chapter, it has nice and easy pace :-)
