I’m surprised she didn’t at least realize that an easy way to get a couple more percent survival from baptisms would be an ice bath. No magic needed, slow the body’s biological processes to give the system more time to work before everything gets critical. Any hypothermia or other consequences could be easily healed if they survive the baptism. And the government would love it even if it gave only one or two percent greater success because it would give them the moral grounds to set up baptism programs and centers to increase the number of people attempting under the guise of making things safer. After all even with thermal mages peasants probably couldn’t afford dozens of pounds of ice and definitely not a healer on standby.

A dialysis variant would be helpful too. Small "pipes" with suction at the interference free end to remove blood from internal and external bleeding. Magic to revitalise the blood. Then other pipes to pump the blood where it is needed. All the magic would happen away from the systems conversion.

Taylor

The actual was wording was harmful radiation and similar effects. It’s quite probable that broken mana was under similar effects.

Thanks for the reply. I hadn't considered that. I think that sooner or later someone at the Royal Court will read the report on Alice process and summon her to ask some question. She is an Otherworder and a possible link to the Society of Starry Eyes (as a victim). her file should have some flag saying "read it and speak with this person.

The reason I added Perk combination into the story is, indeed, to reduce bloating on Alice's Status Screen. In the... second? draft of this story, while I was writing up a character sheet for an example Immortal (I think it was Allira, whose name I can never remember how to spell, or the Sun Knight?) I realized I needed to track like 120 Perks minimum for that character. I would struggle to do that, so I started finding ways to cut down on Perk count a little so that it became less absurd instead of more. Combining Perks was one of the ideas I liked the best.

There is indeed a 'finder's fee' for new Perks once you nail down exact details (by taking the Perk). However, Alice hasn't revealed {Explorer of Magic} because one of the requirements Alice saw to take the class was the need to have the {Outworlder} Achievement, and Alice doesn't want to reveal that. Since her new combined Perk is from that particular class she wouldn't consider selling the information to the Church.

Thanks

Magic Blaze

She opened up her Perk selection menu and started with [Explorer of magic]. As usual, there were three new Perk options.

This was a grand chapter as well; I loved the look into a mana baptism. The response Alice got when she was checking combined perks makes me wonder if the system does have an intelligence behind it with how it seemed unsure of the effects, and has most functions simply automated for itself. Perhaps the better support she receives is in fact just the intelligence pays more attention to her. "Overclock Requirements: Kinetic Manabinder level 20 or higher For two hours, only while you are enchanting, drastically increase the speed and focus you have while thinking and manipulating mana. Does not apply to other you can enchant things. Only usable once per day." While I get the jist of the perk, the second to last sentence seems a bit off.

Diego Rossi

She certainly will need the approbation of an ethical committee and of the person that would be baptized.

Magic Blaze

The babtism doesn't even need to be an accident. The church of the system already performs mana babtism on those who request it. If she gains a higher postition in society she would probably be allowed to observe any mana babtisms that take place. Though experiments on improving survival chances are a completely seperate thing and won't be approved without a really compelling reason.

RuRo

I don't know, whether I believe that mana is a type of radiation (weird perk wording aside), but even if we take this as a fact, that still doesn't make this a plot hole or anything. "Radiation" doesn't mean "scary nuclear stuff, that causes tumors". Visible light is radiation and so are radio waves, neither of which can cause radiation poisoning. It's clear, that mana interacts differently with humans during a mana baptism, so "it's just radiation poisoning" is a very surface level explanation, that might not even be right.

Diego Rossi

I just thought something: Alice could have heard some information that show a way to increase the chances to survive mana baptism, but she hasn't realized it: - the Organic Mage when she asked about the Scout chances: "Generally speaking, a successful mana baptism tends to be a faster baptism. The longer it takes, the worse his odds are," - what she observed: "Since the System focused so much on keeping all of the mana similar to the kind that had started the baptism, perhaps it was safer to finish the process using the same kind of mana?" "Since the System converted all kinds of mana into the ‘correct’ mana for a mana baptism, and the man seemingly needed to stick with one kind of mana from start to finish during his baptism, trying to use any kind of healing-based mana during the healing process might be useless. " Instead of feeding healing based mana, maybe feeding the same kind of mana that started the baptism can sped it up and make it safer? The problem, naturally, is the ethic of the experiment. Going from a 4% to a 6% (random number) chance of success isn't something that will be accepted by any ethical committee for a test. And the tests will kill 96% of the people if they are failures. But testing it with her Safety Analysis perk will be ethically acceptable. An accidental mana baptism is rare, but I bet that Alice will see another in the future.

MinE

Actually, I'm pretty sure there are no normal level 50+ perks, only perk combinations.

D

Ohhhh the torment of an extra large chapter, the pain of reading it! Pls, by all means, give us more of those. =D

Taylor

Not only that but there is a whole competing church. The Church of Mana

MinE

Agreed, I really want to see the full status sheet without scrolling for an hour.

MinE

She could've forgotten

Drake_Azathoth

I'm pretty sure it's like Yugi-oh, the sacrifice of the two lesser perks lets you choose a level 55 perk that's much better than you normally would get. Presumably if you sacrificed the perks at level 90 it would be even better.

Drake_Azathoth

Lol I think that is kind of intentional by the author to prevent the character sheet from getting too absurdly long. And honestly, if the perk combo is good enough, (and this is definitely an example of good enough), losing two much weaker perks and missing out on a new also weaker perk is worth it.

Dopplerdee

Question. Does perk fusion not free up the slots from used perks? I mean the perk is good but it took three slots to make. Seems like a bad cost benefit.

Rickard Gustavsson

Unless you changed earlier chapters then Alice should be well aware of why uncontrolled mana in the body has the same symptoms as radiation poisoning, an early perk selection said "mana and other types of radiation", meaning that she should already know what mana is.. buut she doesn't.. and can't she pick from earlier lower level perks if nothing interests her from the latest unlocked options? she's wanted several perks from earlier selections that she still hasn't picked, seems the better choice than grabbing something she doesn't want/need..

Diego Rossi

Even more than before I think that Alice need to learn what would be the position of the Church of the System about her experiments. She has insights they would like to know, I think. Some of them can go agaist the common doctrine, but the one example we had was a person reasonably open to new informations, and the Church is about getting more knowledge. Then there is the part about the new perks she gets. Maybe I recall wrong, but I am under the impression that reporting new perks get you a small "finder fee" from the Church. With Alice economic situation it can be worth thinking about that.

Diego Rossi

Thanks for the chapter. Very good! 7k words, but they were read so rapidly. :-/ Does not apply to other you can enchant things. -> Does not apply when helping other to enchant things. (I think) Alice was finally starting stabilize her schedule a bit. -> Alice was finally starting TO stabilize her schedule a bit.

Magic Blaze

Is it like a pick one or the other kind of thing like combine two perks or take a new one

Magic Blaze

Does Alice not get a level 55 explorer of magic perk if she combines two perks?
