Well in the books Mance is still alive thank's to Melisandre's deception. So he still has a greater role to play. But it's one of these plotline they didn't follow in the show

What I love about watching people react to shows is that I get to look back and really think about the consequences of the actions as well as the hints given about the future of the show. It really is cool to do that, and I love experiencing it with you since you do very much analyze things that bring up a lot of memories for me. Thank you!

I think the wording in the Baelish-Sansa scene is important: She‘d realized that their travel direction to begin with was westbound in contrast to the way to the Fingers, his home (which would be north, I think? Not sure.). But then when they are about their destination, he just said „to a place so far from here…“, not „to a place so far west from here“. ;-)
