I feel like Gus, because he owns a big chain of chicken restaurants, could probably own a nice house and hide the fact that he paid for it by being a cartel boss selling meth. He just probably doesn't care to have an ostentatious property.

Yes, Walter cares about Jesse in some way (and of course, he cares a lot about himself), but Mike's 'no more half measures' speech likely played a major role in how Walt chose to act at the end of the episode.
