Geuse is a spirit who can possess human bodies by contracting with them (typically his most faithful followers, the "fingers"). He is also able to forcefully contract with people who have high spirit affinity but no spirit contract, which he does to Subaru in season 1. When he resides in a body for a long time, its appearance gradually transforms to resemble a man with green hair. The body Petelgeuse was using in season 1 had seemingly been his host for so long that it was a rotting corpse.
