Earth King from original Avatar was so incompetent, he is not only bad king, he also spoiled her daughter raising her wrong way and she turned this way. And he couldn't do anything about it 🤦‍♂️ In comics Zuko, Aang and Earth King after long escalation and agreements decided to let people on the colonies decided what to choose. They choose independence no matter Fire Nation or Earth Kingdom. Zuko didn't want families of Earth and Fire People being separated and being integrated back to Earth Kingdom or Fire Nation. So he talked to Aang and they come to agreement to support idea of colony people to have independent state/country. Irony is previous earth king was fine in the end. But his daughter for some reason wasn't.
