With regards to the scene wherein Reiner talks about the island. First he starts off with, "There were all sorts of people there..." and then proceeds to provide a very lame story. This is done to convey that Reiner doesn't really have anything bad to say about any of the people on Paradis. It shows that he is essentially forcing himself to come up with something bad to say. In fact, Gabi catches the aforementioned phrase and correctly asks Reiner why he said there were "...all sorts of people" when in her mind the people of Paradis are all devils and thus evil. Of course we then see Reiner's mom chime in and bring the conversation back on course by telling Gabi how those people on the island are all devils and how the Eldians on the mainland are the "Good Eldians", etc. The next day Gabi remarks to Reiner that he has changed somehow. Which is hinting at the emotional weight that Reiner is carrying given his experiences on Paradis.

You brought up an interesting point about how those in Liberio, such as Grishaβs parents, prioritize safety over freedom. This feels like a direct parallel to episode one of the show where everyone in Shiganshina was satisfied living within the walls as long as they felt safe from the titans. Erin saw that as living like cattle, but luckily had folks like the scouts to help him believe that there were other things to strive for. In Liberio, anyone who is caught fighting the oppression is sent to Paradis and turned into titans. Grisha, his wife, and the other members of their resistance group being prime examples. Such a grim outlook when any measure of hope ends up under the boot of Marley
