You’re correct: Ozai’s father (Azulon) ordered Ozai to kill Zuko, because Azulon was angry at Ozai for trying to steal Iroh’s throne. Zuko’s mom (Ursa) killed Azulon to protect Zuko, allowing Ozai to steal the throne. Azula learned of the invasion because the Earth King accidentally told her while she was disguised as a Kyoshi Warrior.
