The Filter App: Rita & Don
🕑 Added 2024-08-09 11:00:07 +0000 UTCRita and Don were old, and it showed in most things that they tried to do in the ever increasingly futuristic world that seemed to have passed them by. Case in point, they were struggling to use the tablet that Rita had asked her friend's son to order for the two of them off the Internet. The older white woman was determined to figure out how to work the Internet, especially now that all her shows had gone on something called 'streaming'! Ugh, she didn't much care for technology!
Don was too senile to really care or be of much help; he just held the tablet while his wife poked around on it aimlessly. After what felt like an eternity of tapping and swiping with no clear progress, Rita accidentally tapped on an icon that she didn't recognize. The screen flashed, and suddenly, Rita's face contorted in surprise as she stared at herself on the screen. Her reflection showed a young African American man staring back at her, a shaved head, thick beard and more modern stylized glasses on a puzzled looking face. Next to the strange young man was a wonderfully pretty looking young woman, her complexion only a shdae light then the man's, with her black hair culy and wild on her head. Was...was that supposed to be them!? Was this one of these strange 'filters' all the young people liked to use?
"Don! Don, look at this!" Rita exclaimed, shaking her husband's arm in excitement, and gasped as her masculine, black reflection did the same. Oh, this was so wonderful!
"What in the world...?" Don muttered, his voice trailing off in disbelief as the African-American beauty mirrored his puzzled expression.
The elderly couple spent the next few moments moving their limbs and making faces and marveling at the tablet's screen. That was when Rita spotted a rounded little image with the word 'save' on it! Thinking it would be amusing to show their friends later, she reached out with a wrinkled finger, grinning as the black man in the tablet did the same and then gave it a long, hard push (and had expected some resistance from the spring behind the button, as she had never used a touchscreen before). The tablet's screen flashed brightly, and in an instant, everything changed. The world seemed to spin as the old pastels of their retirement home apartment changed, the furniture chaning with it...As well as Rita and Don!. In an instant the worlds had flipped and instead of the elderly white husband and wife...In their place now sat a young, African-American couple.
"Wow, this app is cool!" Rick said, grinning as he handed the tablet to Donisha. "I can't believe that's what we'd look like as white old folks!
"Yeah, me too," Donisha replied with a laugh. "But I think I'm ready for some Netflix and chill, baby" She purred as she gave Rick a deep kiss. Afterwards, Donisha pulled up the Netflix app and started browsing through their favorite shows, eager to start their true first night in their new home. The tablet began playing as they settled into each other's arms, completely unaware of the two concluding lives they'd just left behind.
Donisha was happy to be with Rick, and Rick, well, he was just happy that the tablet worked! He loved technology!
