Whatever It Takes To Survive Part 3

Koraxus Prothean Site – Research Log 1: With the Normandy forced to retreat and our alliance with the Blood Pack tenuous at best I don't know how much progress I'll be able to make in my research. If everything remains stable I might have some luck uncovering the purpose of this particular structure but I've already prepared myself for the worst. Particularly when my tools and instruments are so limited. Even my ability to record my thoughts and findings has been reduced dramatically thanks to the Reaper's attack.
I'll need to be careful with what I write down and how often I do so. To preserve space and ensure nothing important is lost. Which means I should probably end this journal now before I ramble on any further. Hopefully we won't be at the mercy of the Blood Pack for much longer. Although if any of them have the resources I need this entire effort might not be lost.
Koraxus Prothean Site – Research Log 2: I know I shouldn't be using these as a journal but I've discovered a Cerberus base within the Prothean structure. Or rather tucked away underneath. It's totally abandoned, of course, but it seems like they were here for the same reasons. But at some point their research into the Protheans turned towards research of the Reapers and the tools they used to eradicate intelligent life across the galaxy. I'm familiar with a good deal of what they were studying but some things are entirely unknown to me. I'll need to investigate this further and make sure they didn't leave anything active behind. I certainly wouldn't put it past Cerberus to leave perfectly functional and functioning Reaper technology behind at a base.
Koraxus Prothean Site – Research Log 3: It seems they were studying more than Reaper technology, though I suppose husks would still qualify as “Reaper tech” to most of my companions. And I wouldn't really argue with them on that opinion. But regardless of classification Cerberus was investigating them for reasons I can only guess. None of them good.
So far I haven't been able to discern the exact nature of their experimentation, few of the terminals left behind are functional. But it seems like the husks are... well if not alive then functional to some extent inside their liquid filled tanks. I'd hardly call them alive even when they're being used as shock troops. But for the time being they're all in a state of suspended animation. Not unlike a coma or putting a terminal into sleep mode rather than shutting it down. They aren't receptive to any stimuli like noise but they do have a slight response to light sources.
Of course I'm doing my best not to fully agitate any of them. Just looking at what the Reapers did to these unfortunate Humans makes my skin crawl. And at times it almost seems like they're moving ever so slightly whenever I'm not looking directly at any of them.
Koraxus Prothean Site – Research Log 4: I'm all but certain the husks are awake and aware of their surroundings despite how docile they might seem. I've yet to prove my suspicions correct but there are too many instances of them shifting and squirming in the tanks housing them. They look inert but I've seen enough to know that's simply untrue. Even if I don't entirely know what's happening or what they're doing.
I should check the Reaper technology Cerberus kept here again. I'll need to make absolutely sure it's fully shut down before I continue.
Koraxus Prothean Site – Research Log 5: All the Reaper technology within the lab is shut down. I've double and tripled checked everything that seemed even tangentially related to the Reapers. As well as anything Cerberus might've created from their technology. I still feel uneasy about working with all this but knowing there's no need to fear indoctrination or anything of the sort alleviates my concerns enough to continue. And my curiosity about the husks has only grown. I've never had a chance to study one up close before. At least not one riddled with holes or crushed and twisted by biotic energy. From what I've seen of the systems keeping them docile I should be able to remove one from it's tank and examine it closer. I'll need to if I want to do more than look at it through a murky haze of unidentifiable liquid. But I'll need to be cautions.
Koraxus Prothean Site – Research Log 6: I've successfully removed a husk from it's tank and onto a nearby operating table. But since I lack the tools to do much more than a visual examination I couldn't accomplish much. I suppose I could perform an autopsy on it if I really need but with only half a dozen husks to work with that should be a last resort. I think I'll focus my attention on other areas of the base and the Prothean structure above.
Oh yes, and the physical examination didn't yield any interesting information. At least none worth noting down. Except for the entirely intact and, seemingly, functional male genitalia. Koraxus Prothean Site – Research Log 7: The rest of Cerberus' lab holds a great deal of secrets and oddities entirely in line with every other base I've seen. Even with that minor irritation I can't help being fascinated by the breadth of Reaper technology and similar items they've managed to acquire.
Koraxus Prothean Site – Research Log 8: Much as I try to focus my attention on other, more immediate discoveries I can act upon the mystery of the husk I examined lingers in the back of my mind. I don't entirely know why and I certainly wouldn't want to fixate on it if given the choice. But for some reason it's impossible to focus entirely on anything else.
So much so I even retrieved the other husks from their tanks to examine them too. Ensuring none of them woke up during the process took me an entire day but it was well worth the effort. Or at least I thought it was in the moment. Looking back now I think it's only deepened my growing obsession. I can't possibly imagine why all six husks would still possess their genitals when no other by product of Reaper technology has retained anything similar. And upon closer examination of each I can confidently say it wasn't something added by Cerberus after capture.
Admittedly I couldn't possibly fathom why Cerberus would do such a thing. But then again I can't fathom why they fed Shepard's old squad to a Thresher Maw so it was worth checking. The actions Cerberus take rarely ever make coherent sense.
Koraxus Prothean Site – Research Log 9: Just as I predicted confirming all six husks share that same bizarre characteristic hasn't satisfied my curiosity in the least. It's been several days since I proved they all have male (Human) genitalia and no other subject has managed to pique my interest to quite the same degree. Not even the Prothean structure above the lab. I'd been spending nearly all my time down here even before that particular discovery but now I can't remember the last time I've left.
