Counter Heal triggers automatically when the user takes damage over a certain threshold (i.e. getting bitten by a monster triggers it, but stubbing his toe does not). Sorin can't choose to manually cast it at will. Instead, he free casts a different healing spell like the one Odric uses.

EC could you pease comment on why/how Counter Heal is not usable for sustained/repeated healing? Does it take time to invest/mature? Does it only restore wounds incurred after cast? Does invested anima decay over time? Why can’t Sorin e.g. chain cast Counter Heal each time he is wounded? I’m assuming it’s bit intended to with that way, I want to know why it doesn’t.
