Is the 'him' in the last paragraph referring to Sorin or the old man? It's a bit unclear.

He isn't very bright. I don't understand why he assumes Samael doesn't know about this sign. Unless Samael already knew about the multiple towers and Liminal Space, he would have gone thru the same bit of discovery. Which means he would have used this alley until he carved his own in Floor 0.

He did place a extra sign on floor zero that got destroyed when he escaped the guild library maybe that is connected

Somehow I think that he can't place a sign where Samael already has one. Would be a major risk for him.
