🕑 Added 2018-09-29 02:57:50 +0000 UTC this week i've been working on a section of the second level that happens in parallel with the boys exploring andy's memory to get to dab's lair. As you maybe remember , the shaman that helps zap and andy has them drinking some doubtful concoction made of hell mushrooms to access andy's dreams and innermost memories. You've seen the dream itself, but to solve some of the puzzles there, the boys will have to go back and forth to a state were they are more asleep than awake and a state where they can walk around in the real world. But since they're under the effect of the hell mushrooms things aren't exactly normal when they go around half awake-half dreaming.
so i went full psychedelic on this bg's ass and the residents will also appear altered by the boys' perceptions. (more on that tomorrow, probably)
as for the boys themselves ,we thought it would be cool if they looked kind of different. At first we thought their look would change to reflect how they perceived themselves, but since that would end up becoming kind of sad (zap feels inadequate and out of place and andy feels like a faker and a poser) we decided to instead depict how zap and andy see eachother:
this was the first try , the idea was that zap sees andy as a cool rebel , confident and strong in his convictions, someone who figured everything out, while andy sees zap as a big, gentle soft teddy bear.
while andy design was spot on, we had to scrap the bear idea because it kinda clashed with dab and because of something that happens later in the game and that would've felt redundant
so i revised zap's design into a big flower. Andy still thinks he's adorable and sexy, but he also thinks he's out of place, fragile and too naive and pure for hell. I also retouched andy's design to make him look a bit more different than his usual self and more heroic.
after designing them, it was time to animate their new looks for this section!
