“C’mon Sam, are you gonna just stand there or help me lift this stupid thing?” Alex groaned as she tried to lift the rolling shutter blocking off the entrance to Arcade California. She blew her long blue hair off her face as she stretched her exposed arms. The woman’s crop-top left her tummy exposed and her short-shorts did little to alleviate the chill in the air of the drafty old mall.
The arcade was closed for repairs after a few mysterious accidents injured customers, but that wasn’t going to stop Alex and her friends from ghost hunting in the supposedly haunted venue.
“Fine, just remember to lift from the knees. I don’t want to do the bulk of the lifting…” Sam sighed defeatedly. She had short blonde hair styled into a bob, and was wearing black cargo pants with a baggy cream-coloured sweater over a white crop-top.
Despite her better judgement, Sam had been roped into this little after-hours exploration mission by Alex, and even agreed to show up earlier than everyone else so the pair had the place all to themselves for a bit.
The loud screech of metal on metal as the shutter was raised echoed through the closed shopping mall, making Sam shudder. Inside were rows and rows of arcade machines of various ages, all powered down and still. The prize counter was a bit messy, as if previous intruders had rummaged around for freebies. Despite the renovation signs outside, there wasn’t any construction equipment inside whatsoever.
“Huh? Where’s all the reno stuff?” Sam asked aloud.
“Who cares about that! We’ve got the whole place to ourselves!”
Alex didn’t hesitate to step inside, but as soon as she did, every light, speaker, and game machine in the arcade came to life; blinking lights flashed and exciting music blared from all over the venue as if it were open for business.
“OH FU-!!” Sam burst in shock before quickly regaining composure.
“Oh c’mon, it’s probably on a motion sensor or something. And hey, now we can sneak in a few rounds of games before the others arrive!”
Reluctantly following her friend, Sam crossed her arms and pouted.
“What do you want to play? How about Packed Men? Or maybe Donkey’s Dong?”
“Uhhh, are those really the names of-”
“Ooooh!! Look, a fighting game I’ve never heard of before! Not often I see a franchise I’m unfamiliar with! C’mon, let’s play this one!” Alex was practically vibrating with excitement as she inserted a quarter into the gaming cabinet titled ‘Transform Critters’ and began navigating the menu. “Huh? Are all the characters locked?”
A grid of silhouettes was displayed on the screen. Listed character names included Cassowary, Pig, Shark, Chameleon, Pangolin, and Cow, among others. Each silhouette resembled their namesake creature at least a little, but there was not much detail to be made out.
“Hmmm, I can still select them… Well, let’s see what Pangolin is like I guess.”
“PANGOLIN!” As soon as Alex hit Player One’s enter button, the narrator of the game exclaimed the selected character in a booming voice.
Alex was suddenly hit by a wave of vertigo and lost her balance. The woman had to hold onto the arcade machine to stay upright. “Nnng, wh-what? I f-feel… urk…”
When Alex moved her left hand to hold her head, Sam saw that her friend’s fingernails were now more like thick talons. Moreover, her fingers had thickened up a little and some scales were present on the back of her hand.
“Uhhh… Did you become a scalie behind my back or something? Not that I mind, just that I didn’t see when you put on those reptile gloves…” Sam knew deep down something was very wrong, but she kept clinging to the easiest solution she could think of.
“What are you talking abou-” Alex froze and her jaw dropped when she took a look at her own hands. “WOAH!! Look at these claws!! I feel like I could tear through metal with these things!!” The excited woman playfully slashed and clawed the air as if she were Wolverine.
“ACK-!! W-watch where you’re swinging those things!! Now take them off before one of us gets hurt…”
“Huh? These aren’t gloves, they’re real!”
Sam watched in horror as the smile on Alex’s face was stretched out while her nose and maw grew into a long, scaled snoot.
“Uh, Sam? What’s wrong?”
“Y-your face! You’re changing!!”
“Well I knew that, how else do you explain my hands?”
“B-but aren’t you scared!? Or panicked!? Or, I don’t know, even the tiniest bit concerned!?” Sam spat frantically.
“Why would I be? This is awesome!” Alex flexed her arms, drawing attention to their now-scaled physique. In fact, her entire body was gaining muscle and padding as scales formed over every inch of her skin. Her tight tank top and short shorts were torn to shreds as her body outgrew them in a moment.
“Oh god, Alex this isn’t right!!” Sam stumbled back a step and lost her balance. She grabbed the arcade machine for support, inadvertently pressing Player Two’s enter button.
“PIG!” The narrator shouted, alerting Sam to her mistake.
“Wh-what!? N-no, I didn’t choose anything! S-stop!!” But it was too late. She too was feeling dizzy as an unfamiliar warmth spread through her body.
While Sam was still trying to maintain her balance, Alex’s transformation continued. Intense pressure in her tailbone made her aware of the strong tail she was growing, while her expanding feet struggled to break free from her tough boots. Eventually, the hard leather gave way, letting her powerful, taloned paws breathe at last.
“This is rad!” Alex fist pumped as she examined her new body.
Sam, though, was not having nearly as fun a time as her friend. Her chest felt tight, some sort of sensitive rash had broken out on her tummy, and her fingers felt like they were about to pop. “I can’t take it! Make it sto-oink!!” The transfiguring woman snorted involuntarily as her sinuses and nasal structure felt all stuffy and compressed.
“Oh my god, you’re going to be a cute lil piggy!!” Alex cheered excitedly. “I bet you’re going to be all soft and cuddly!”
“N-nooo, I c-can’t be a pig!!” Sam stared at her shaky hands, powerless to stop her fingers from curling up and merging together into hooves. “Oiiiiink!!” The desperate woman tried to run away, but tripped over her changing feet and tumbled to the floor. Her crop top burst at the seams, revealing her expanding tiddies for Alex to observe.
“Damn Sam, you’re really getting an upgrade!”
“S-stop gawking and h-help me!!”
Alex helped Sam to her feet - or rather, shoeless hooves - and stared shamelessly at her friend’s assets. “What!? No fair, why don’t I get an extra rack or two!?”
Struggling to flatten her bust with her useless hooves, Sam looked down to see two pairs of boobs of descending size forming under her original pair! What she had believed to be outbreaks of a rash were really new nipples growing in. “AAIIIEEEEE!!” She whined like the swine she was turning into.
“Don’t worry, I think they suit you~” Alex bit her lip flirtatiously.
“I don’t want them, I want to be human!!” Sam’s voice was much more nasally now that her face featured a fully pig-like snoot. Moreover, a curly little tail and long floppy pig ears had sprouted on her body, completing her new appearance.
The pair had completed their conversion into fighting characters Pangolin and Pig.
“MATCH SET!” The announcer boomed again as a loading screen appeared on the arcade machine. The monitor, however, seemed to bulge outwards towards the changed players. Before either of them could so much as question it, the monitor enveloped a hand - or hoof, in Sam’s case - from both women as if it were made of living liquid!
“AAIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEE! SQUEEEEE!!” Pig shrieked, desperately struggling against the cursed contraption. Again she lost her balance on her new lower hooves, giving Transform Critters an opening to snag each of her other limbs.
Pangolin, though, was much burlier and had slightly more success at fleeing the horrifying arcade cabinet. She tugged hard as she ran, but the monitor simply stretched like taffy and refused to let go. When the tension of the gooey arcade monitor became too great, Pangolin was flung back towards the cabinet at high speed, where she landed directly into the viscous monitor. Her upper body was forced through the monitor first, leaving her legs kicking the air as she was slowly absorbed into the game.
Pig watched all this happen as terror and adrenaline shot through her veins. She squirmed and writhed with all her might, but she could do nothing when it was her turn to be slowly dragged through the molasses-like screen and into the magical video game.
The next thing either of them knew, the women were facing each other in an aliased, low-polygon barnyard. Now, their own bodies had also been converted to a series of video game polygons covered in low-res textures that didn’t look out of place with their surroundings. Health bars hung above their heads conspicuously as the excitable announcer stated “Round One… FIGHT!”
